The Game Deserves Better; A Brief Look at the Actions Taken in Boston.

A calculated act of revenge meant to harm a player is something too often seen today in the NHL. Unfortunately for those watching the Penguins v Bruins game on Saturday, we witnessed such an event.

Bruins notable tough guy Shawn Thornton skated halfway across the ice to address Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik. In doing so, Thornton threw Orpik to the ice via a slew foot and then threw two punches to his face.

It appeared from the second shot that Orpik’s head hit the ice, most likely the cause of unconsciousness that occurred. In this instance, the ugly side of the NHL reared its head. These acts are unacceptable, despite whatever justification has been conjured up.

Pregame 12/3: Islanders vs. Penguins

The Islanders turn the calendar to December and host the Pittsburgh Penguins at Nassau Coliseum tonight for the first time since game 6 of the playoffs last spring. This concludes a 4 game home stand before heading on a West coast road trip. This is the 3rd of 4 meetings between the teams this season and the season series is a win each for both teams.

Penguins Drop Two Straight; Looking for Healthy Returns to Provide Consistency

The Penguins have now dropped two straight and are just 5-5 in their last ten games. Their offense has been struggling as of late and the defense has found little consistency following the injury to Rob Scuderi. So the question is, what can the Penguins do find success?

On the Defensive Side – With Rob Scuderi out of the lineup, the Penguins have been forced to alter their defensive pairings. Unfortunately, now Paul Martin is considered day to day and will most likely miss his second straight game on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Flyers. With all of that in mind, the Penguins do not have too many options other than to alter their pairings.

The first Penguins pairing...

Penguins Finally Snap Losing Streak; Suffer Devastating Losses on the Injury Front

After suffering three straight losses to likes of the Colorado Avalanche, the New York Islanders, and the Toronto Maple Leafs the Penguins finally beat the Carolina Hurricanes.

An entire week of losses gave the Penguins their first three game losing streak since the early going of the 2011-2012 season. In the three game losing streak the NHL’s leading point producer, Sidney Crosby, was held to just a single goal and no assists.

To be completely fair in this assessment the Penguins were still impressive in their five on five play. The Pens outshot the competition by an average of 12 shots per game and clearly had an advantage in time of possession, but the club was ...

Two Week Recap; Forwards Edition

In part two of the opening season review we will examine the forwards and their contributions thus far to the season. While some players are keeping to the status quo, a few forwards have started to make their mark on the early season.

Start with the Obvious – The Pittsburgh Penguins top line of Chris Kunitz, Sidney Crosby, and Pascal Dupuis is arguably the strongest line in all of hockey. They have a combined nine goals through six games, seven of which have come while playing five on five hockey.

Here are a few other stats to show how good this line has been. *All statistics are a combined total.

+ 10, 56 shots on net, 24 total points, 8 Takeawas, 28 Hits, 87 Fac...

Islanders Even Up Series with Penguins At Nassau Coliseum

Isles Tie Series With Pens at 2 Games Each. Much more exciting hockey to come out of the next three games.

Eastern Conference QF Islanders vs. Penguins Game 1: Preview

The 2013 NHL season has come to an end and an impressive push down the stretch by our beloved Isles has secured them the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference. For the first time since 2007, the New York Islanders will play post-season hockey and compete for Lord Stanley’s Cup.

However, the real challenge lies ahead for the Islanders, as they will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the playoffs. The Penguins basically ran circles around the rest of the Eastern Conference during the lockout-shortened 2013 season, finishing in 1st place with 72 points. (Photo Credit: Beauty Playin 'Eh/Flickr)

Pittsburgh Earns Record Win As Islanders Squander Opportunities

The victory, Pittsburgh's 15th straight, was also a record night in another way: the Pens have extended their club record shutout streak. The Pens shutout streak now extends over 208 minutes as Pittsburgh has won the last three by shutout.

Pens netminder Tomas Vokoun has extended his personal best shutout streak to just shy of 163 minutes.

The game could have went another way though.

Examining The Acquisitions

When a team finds success in the NHL on a consistent basis, it is very difficult for GM’s to tinker with said success in order to find greater success. It is the easiest explanation as to how the NHL has witnessed such playoff parity. In the modern cap era it has become even more difficult to place a team on the ice that has a continued shot at a championship. So with all of this in perspective, is it possible that we see a Stanley Cup champion this season that has also won the cup within the past five seasons?

It is the question that seemingly everyone in the NHL is waiting to see. With Pittsburgh and Chicago pushing the boundaries of greatness, the NHL might finally witness ...

We Got'em

Well, the Pittsburgh Penguins have officially acquired Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames. In exchange for the veteran’s experience the Penguins have traded their first round selection in the 2013 entry level draft and unsigned college prospects Ben Hanowski and Kenny Agostino.

Amid rumors and credited reporting, Jarome Iginla had initially been on his way to Boston. After a tough loss to the Canadiens, Boston fans were rejoicing in emphatic jubilance to have such a revered player help fix whatever ail their team. Twitter erupted with numerous reports on how the trade was won and how Boston has pulled into a virtual (paper champion) tie with the Pittsburgh Penguins after th...
