BREAKING: JvR to miss time with concussion

Head injuries have become a thing of the norm in the NHL.

And for the Flyers, it's becoming a bit too constant.

James van Riemsdyk will now join a list of Flyers to be bit with the concussion bug this season. In a statement from general manager Paul Holmgren, van Riemsdyk will be out indefinitely.

Adam Foote might be the only NHL defenseman more despised by Wings faithful than Chris Pronger over the past 15 seasons. That's a big might. Pronger is strong, mean and skilled; he's a player you hate for your squad to play against but would love to have him on your team. Whether it was with St. Louis, Edmonton or Anaheim, Pronger gave the Wings trouble in the postseason with crunching hits and booming point shots. His battles with Tomas Holmstrom were epic and memorable.

Unfortunately the concussion epidemic sweeping the league also struck Pronger who is shut down for the remainder of the season with post-concussion syndrome. It's a detriment to the league when any play...

Waiting is the hardest part.

After only nine career NHL games with the Los Angeles Kings over a two-year period, Brayden Schenn quickly became familiar with the phrase.

Following an offseason trade to the Philadelphia Flyers, a team that was a perfect fit for the 20-year old center man to play right away, it seemed as though Schenn finally had his shot.

Daniel Briere and James van Riemsdyk had rough starts to the 2011-12 season.

Both players had to battle through injuries and were not producing the way that many had hoped they would.

However, since the calendar has flipped over to 2012, the two players have seemed to flip with it.

On Thursday night, HBO concluded their 24/7 series profiling the road to the Winter Classic for the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers.

Over the last four weeks, the show has offered fans a unique view into the lives of the two teams that otherwise never could have been seen.

The series finale took a symmetrical look at the two teams. In both a literal and figurative sense, it was a tale of two cities.

Nothing about Thursday night was unfamiliar to the Philadelphia Flyers.

For a team that has missed a combined total of 132 man-games due to injury/illness this season, taking the ice without a key player in their lineup has become commonplace.

On this night, the Flyers were forced to challenge the Central Division leading Chicago Blackhawks without the aide of the third-highest scorer on their team, Jaromir Jagr.

This too was nothing new.

Here we go again.

A phrase that fans of the Philadelphia Flyers became very familiar with during Thursday night’s 5-4 victory over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks.

The first time they uttered the phrase came three minutes into the first period when Jimmy Hayes put the Blackhawks up by one.

The second time they cursed it when the Blackhawks tied the game on the back of two goals that occurred within 25 seconds of one another with six minutes left in the third.

The third time they erupted with it when James van Riemsdyk scored his second goal of the game to put the Flyers ahead for good with 33 seconds remaining in regulation.

At this point, it’s strange when some one isn’t getting injured on the Flyers.

The unfortunate trend continued into the New Year, when Jaromir Jagr started things off as only a member of the Flyers could, with another injury.

While it will be no easy to task to replace the team’s third-highest point producer, the situation does provide a golden opportunity for several members of the team.

As if losing a two-goal lead in Monday’s Winter Classic wasn’t enough, the Philadelphia Flyers also lost one of their top scorers for at least the near future.

On Tuesday afternoon, general manager Paul Holmgren announced that Jaromir Jagr will be out 7-10 days with a groin strain. Jagr appeared to aggravate the injury during the second period of Monday’s game when he aggressively drove to the New York goal.

With Jagr out, several scenarios begin to surface. Not only will the team need to fill the opening left by the star forward on the top line, but it also opens up the opportunity for other players to earn some extra ice time with elevated play.

With the Winter Classic right around the corner, the Philadelphia Flyers (21-8-4) received a big boost Wednesday night in Dallas when Claude Giroux returned to the lineup after missing four games with a concussion.

His presence in the lineup is a must and tonight will be a huge test for him and the Flyers as they head to New York to take on the New York Rangers (20-8-4).

In their last match up in New York, a 2-0 loss, Zac Rinaldo and Brandon Prust dropped the gloves four seconds into the game. With the HBO cameras trailing these teams like the paparazzi, it is only natural for the players to want to put on a show.

There is no reason to think tonight will be any different.
