NHL Lockout: Three Teams that could Benefit from Shorter Season

The NHL lockout looms only two days away, or to put it more ominously, “The Day after Tomorrow.” It seems that most pundits agree that the players and owners will be unable to reach an agreement before the September 15 expiration date.

Still, it is unlikely that the league will cancel an entire season again. They survived the first P.R. disaster but with no real on ice solutions to offer, a second cancellation will bring the curtains down on the NHL. A shortened season, however, is a real possibility.

Here are three teams that might benefit from a shorter schedule.

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Scott Hartnell To Six-Year Contract Extension

Today, the Philadelphia Flyers announced the signing of LW Scott Hartnell to a six-year contract extension. The signing comes after Hartnell’s most productive season in the NHL (37 G, 30 A), where he earned himself a spot on the top line as well as a trip to the All-Star Game.

Hartnell has been with the Flyers since the 2007-2008 season, after he was traded - along with Kimmo Timonen - from the Nashville Predators. He signed a six-year, $25.2 million contract with the Flyers almost immediately after coming to Philadelphia, a contract that would have expired at the end of next season.

Dallas Stars Season Preview

Finally, the Dallas Stars have financial freedom. Tom Gaglardi has given GM Joe Nieuwendyk the ability to spend money—and did he ever. He dished out pretty good money to sign some free agents, and pick up a few assets over the summer. Let's take a look at what happened after another heartbreaking season.

In with the new:
Jaromir Jagr - one year, $4.5 million
Ray Whitney - two years, $9 million
Derek Roy -  acquired in Ott trade
Cody Eakin - acquired in Ribeiro trade
Aaron Rome - three years, $4.5 million

Out with the old:
Sheldon Souray - to Anaheim
Mike Ribeiro - to Was...

Montreal Canadiens Fall Out of Jaromir Jagr Sweepstakes

Yesterday, TCL's own Matt Brigidi posted that Jaromir Jagr and the Montreal Canadiens were close to a deal.

Today, numerous reports came out that the Canadiens lost interest in Jagr, most likely because Jagr is seeking $4 million. The Canadiens offered the winger a one-year $3-million deal.

Philadelphia Flyers And Jaromir Jagr Hope To Reach Deal Prior To Draft, According To Report

In a report late Wednesday night by Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com, the Philadelphia Flyers and soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Jaromir Jagr are working on another one-year contract for the 40-year old vet.

Flyers Devils ECSF Game 5 Preview: Hard To Think Flyers On The Brink

The Philadelphia Flyers will have to win or go home tonight as they are on the brink of elimination for the first time in this season's playoffs when they host the New Jersey Devils in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semi Finals.

They will be doing so without the NHL's leading goal scorer in this year's playoffs, Claude Giroux.

Flyers Vs. Devils ECSF Game 2 Preview: Jakubs Ladder

It was no surprise the Philadelphia Flyers struggled to find their game in the first period of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New Jersey Devils.

What was not known, was how long it would take the Flyers to get back to the swing of things and which players were going to lead the way.

Claude Giroux, Danny Briere and James van Riemsdyk accounted for all four Flyer goals. Briere has a history of performing well in the playoffs and looks as if it is rubbing off on JvR and Giroux who have flourished during this time of the year, as well.

One player who could fit that mold in time is Jakub Voracek.

Habs This Week: Flip Flop

Mother Nature had her way with just about everyone this past week, amping up the temperatures to trick everyone into thinking they were in mid-playoff form. Unfortunately, this was the week that the Canadiens discovered (for real) that there is no chance of that for them this year.

Shut Out: Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Cody Hodgson scored his first goal as a Buffalo Sabre and added another in the third period to procure the Sabres a win, Tuesday, against the Canadiens.

The Sabres once were where the Canadiens are, and are now where they usually tend to be at this time of year, fighting for a playo...

Bryz Breaks Beezer's Record; Earns Two More Points

Making Ilya Bryzgalov the story for every game has become tiresome to the fans, the front office and Bryzgalov himself.

But when he does something as special as he's done the past couple of weeks, it's hard to just take all the focus away from the Russian netminder, nicknamed the $51 Million Man.

The Flyers have been winning, and they have been playing a brand of hockey many expected them to play down the stretch. Scoring, defense and goaltending - those are the three things that win championships.

So why does the focus all come back to Bryzgalov? Because of the franchise shutout streak that he just broke that stood tall for 13 years midway through the second period.

Voracek and Jagr injured against Wings; player reaction to Kronwall hit

Injuries are a part of professional sports. Especially around this time of year, the bumps and bruises start to add up leaving almost every player with some kind of sore spot.

For the Philadelphia Flyers, this has been true all season.

The team has had to deal with so many injuries that it’s probably easier to name the guys on the roster who haven’t been hurt compared to the ones who have been.

On Tuesday night, during the team’s impressive 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings the ‘healthy list’ seemingly became a little shorter.
