Gagne Returns as the Flyers Host the Capitals

The Flyers host a hot Washington team looking to rebound from their slow start. Both teams are in need of points as they near the half way mark of the season while resting in the middle of the division.

Ovechkin hat trick helps doom Devils, 5-1

What a difference two days makes.

Alexander Ovechkin scored a hat trick and added an assist while Braden Holtby stopped 21 of 22 shots as the Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 5-1.

It was less than 48 hours ago that Troy Brouwer swung his stick in disgust after the Caps gave up two goals and in the third period that started with a 2-1 Caps lead.

Brouwer would net the game's final goal off of an Ovechkin helper in the closing minutes of the third period.

The third period that the Caps played today was as good a period as the Capitals could have hoped for: they stayed out of the box (save a delay of game penalty, the 10th delay penalty in 17 games), outshot the...

Caps smother Panthers, 5-0

It might have come against another one of the worse teams in the league, but who gives a damn.

Half price pizza from Papa John's will always taste sweet.

The Capitals recorded their third win of the season and their only shutout of the year against the Florida Panthers with a 5-0 win (Caps win by 4+ goals and Papa Johns in the DC/MD/Northern VA area give you half price on your slice, look up the deal, y'all).

Last night was the first time that all that phantom 'better play' became tangible.

Alexander Ovechkin looked like a new player--better yet, the Ovechkin of old, who flew around the ice as fast as he could. And he didn't just stick to the on...

Caps lose late again, 3-2 to Toronto

So let's talk about the ending. The Caps just lost 3-2 after leading 2-1 coming into the third period.

It's great that Alex Ovechkin scored again on the power play and for our own selfish purposes, it's fantastic that Joel Ward scored again. Wardwatch lives another day and we're all the better for it, every one of us.

It's great that the Caps were better on the penalty kill. They killed off all but one of eight penalties that all came in the first two periods.

But that third period.

That was bad.

It wouldn't have been so bad had the Caps not lost the previous game by the same score by giving up two goals in the third period.

Caps beat the Sabres 3-2 for their first win of the season

Remember a few days ago after the Capitals lost 4-1 to the Winnipeg Jets and this writer told you to panic?

Hit the pause button on the painic.

The Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2, their first win of the season.

It's the first win of the season for the Caps.

It wasn't a perfect win but a lot of things looked better.

Maybe the Capitals are understanding bettter what Adam Oates wants from them, the system that he runs.

The shortened training camp was always going to be a bigger problem for any team with a new coach.

One game doesn't prove that everything is all better, but a few things did improve from the first four gam...

A couple things on the Caps opener

The Washington Capitals lost their season opener to the Tampa Bay Lightning, 6-3.

It was just 3-3 at the beginning of the third period but the final third was most certainly lackluster for the Caps.

Let's talk about some things real quick, shall we?

----------

This is the first game of the season under a new coach. After a six-day training camp. On the road.

Now is not the time to panic. Just hang loose.

There are going to be growing pains.

The sooner those growi...

No Balance to Washington Capitals Lines

Balance is good. It's good for a lot of things. It's good for tires. It's good on a beam. It's good on a seesaw.  Having balance on a seesaw is having two riders of near-equal weight who get to enjoy flinging themselves up into the air with the help of the weight of the other rider. Without balance, the lighter of the two riders is stuck up in the air, legs waving wildly, until his fellow rider decides that this ride isn't worth it, gets off and sends his partner crashing back to the ground. Expect a lot of wild waving legs from the Washington Capitals right wingers this season as the team is left-wing heavy. Right now, the right...

Wings Lose to Capitals in First Period

It seems like so long ago when Detroit last won a game, an entire week and a half ago if you can believe it. The Wings last win was against Los Angeles on March 9th. It feels like so much longer though. The Wings did not win one game on their California road trip and now have lost their first game at home against the Washington Capitals. What do you think is keeping the Wings from playing like the Wings?

The Wings fell behind 3 to 0 in the first period and played catch up the rest of the game. There was a lot of talk before the game about how good of a player Alex Ovechkin is, which he proved early on in the game. Ovechkin scored on both power play...

Chimera lifts Caps over Jets in OT

Jason Chimera leads the Washington Capitals with 8 goals. Not Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin or Nicklas Backstrom, the man who had just 10 goals all of last year does.

With his overtime winner over the Winnipeg Jets tonight, Jason Chimera now is two goals shy of last season's total after just 20 games. How's that for secondary scoring.

The Caps also got goals from Alex Semin and Nicklas Backstrom in addition to Chimera's two tallies. Semin scored his 6th goal of the season just one game after being benched by coach Bruce Boudreau.

Alex Ovechkin hit the scoring sheet on a beautiful pass to setup Semin's goal in the f...

Chimera leads Caps over Jets

Jason Chimera scored two goals including the overtime winner on Wednesday night as the Washington Capitals edged the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 at the Verizon Center.

Washington opened the scoring 5:23 into the 1st period as Alex Semin took a pass from a streaking Alexander Ovechkin and beat an out of position Ondrej Pavelec.

The Jets tied the game just past the 13-minute mark when Kyle Wellwood made a nifty pass in the neutral zone to Nick Antropov, who dished it to captain Andrew Ladd who put home his 7th of the season to tie the game at 1.

Twelve seconds later, Jason Chimera scored his 7th of the season on a pass from Brooks Laich at the half boards and once aga...
