In trading the prospect Dec. 3 2009, fellow general managers Brian Burke and Jim Rutherford agreed 2006 first-round pick Jiri Tlusty would not thrive in Toronto.

"(Tlusty) is a player who has a better chance to flourish in a smaller market," Hurricanes general manager Rutherford said in 2009. "It takes a certain type of character to flourish in Toronto. Some guys like it, some guys don't. It's something (Burke) and I talked about when we were making this deal."

Three to five years ago, the acquisition of Tomas Kaberle would have likely been a positive subject for the Montreal Canadiens. Three years ago, Kaberle was a competent offensive defenseman who was a force for the Leafs' blueline, especially on the powerplay. He was a good passer, puck distributor and quarterback, and a player who's value and eventual trade was hotly contested, and a consistent subject of discussion in Toronto and around the league.

Hurricanes Turn Eye to Signing for Depth and Future

After their first week of free agency focused on replacing scoring from the wing and swapping one accomplished defenseman for another, the Carolina Hurricanes  turned in-house with signings of some younger players (all 24 or under) who have started making an impact in the NHL.

Five players inked deals starting July 8, with center Brandon Sutter and blue-liner Derek Joslin on the NHL roster while forward Brett Sutter and defensemen Brett Bellemore and Bobby Sanguinetti all signed two-way deals and will likely start the season with the AHL-affiliate Charlotte Checkers.
