The Detroit Red Wings have won the last two games in a row, which is hopefully an indication of more winning games to come. The Wings beat the Canucks in a late night game last night. What do you think contributed to this win? What do the Wings need to do to continue the streak?
The Detroit Red Wings were flying high after tonight's game against the Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver is one of the top ten teams in the league. Even after the beautiful shutout Jimmy had on Saturday night, the game was still expected to be a nail biter. However, our writer, Brad’s hopefulness about Saturday’s game being a portent of things to come was proven in tonight’s high scoring game. The Detroit Red Wings painfully beat the Canucks.
In their first afternoon game of the year, the Detroit Red Wings will play host to the similarly banged-up Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers can definitely sympathize with Detroit's injury woes, having lost their last four games while having lost three of their four top centers. The Wings also got some bad news heading into this match in the form of losing Todd Bertuzzi for a least a few days with back issues.
The Grand Rapids Griffins are continuing to play good hockey this season. Every game has been close and really exciting to watch. Coach Blashill has brought the team to a new level with his coaching style and it has been great for the fans. He really works the bench and you can see him constantly communicating with the team throughout play. The Griffins are currently in first place in the Midwest Division with 43 points.
As I was sitting in my seat early Friday night at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids my mind was in full motion thinking of the upcoming game and season for the Grand Rapids Griffins. How would the team look this year? With players during the summer signing up overseas and the looming NHL lockout what were the Griffins going to look like and how would they perform?
The Griffins have 6 games remaining in their regular season and are sitting 4 points out from a playoff berth. The team has been playing well the last few games. With so little time left there are 2 major events that need to happen like in every hockey game for them to move on to the playoffs:
They will need to play hard and their team leaders will need to continue scoring goals like they have been doing the last few games.
The defense must play a smart game and protect their goaltender from those unfortunate shots that have plagued the team this year. Giveaway goals are not an option at this point.
There have been a few leaders this week that have jumped out...
The Griffins had an up and down week with a win and a loss to San Antonio and a loss then a win against the Oklahoma City Barons. Along with the team, players are up and down with the Wings due to numerous injuries. Ty Conklin and Jordan Pearce were called up to the Red Wings Due to Howard and MacDonald’s injuries, Doug Janik was back from the Wings and in the lineup for the loss on Thursday to San Antonio. Brendan Smith was reassigned Saturday night to the Griffins but he had flight problems and could not make the game for Sunday. The Griffins have had a tough season this year catching a place into a playoff spot but they have not had a problem when it comes to scoring goals against their opponents. Their offense when clicking is a powerhouse. The team has been strong in the offensive zone and has no problem hurling the puck at the net.
The team has tallied 194 goals in 60 games this season which is an average of 3 goals a game. They also average 34 shots per game. Not only are the forwards throwing shots at the net the D have had their fair share at putting a point on the board.
The top ten scorers for the Griffins are a talented group of young players. Out of the ten players 6 have been up in th...
The Red Wings look to stop the bleeding tonight against the Los Angeles Kings at 7:30 PM. Detroit has been hampered by injuries and has lost their lead atop the NHL, Western Conference and Central Division over the past two weeks.
Detroit now sits four points behind St. Louis in the Central and the West. Los Angeles is battling with San Jose, Phoenix and Dallas for 1st in the Pacific Division. Only 5 points separate division head Dallas and Los Angeles. The race in the Pacific is especially important because it is possible that the division winner could be the only member of the division to make the playoffs if Colorado and Calgary make it in.
On Friday the Griffins battled the big hitting Rochester Americans and came away with an important division win. Rochester took control of the game early but the Griffins were able to pull themselves out of a deficit and come away with a well-deserved 4-3 win. On Saturday the Oklahoma Barons came in leading their Division. The Griffins played a positive game and came away with another win in a shootout. Conklin was very strong and blocked all four shots during the shootout. Fabian Brunnstrom shooting in the third round put in a nice upper shelf shot to take the lead and Chris Minard in the fourth round rocketed a shot past their goalie to win the game.
