Game Preview: Flames vs Dallas Stars

The Flames will host the Dallas Stars for the first and only time this season as they hope to get things on track after a less than stellar first ten games of the season. The Stars come into the Saddledome tonight, on the backend of a back-to-back after beating the Oilers 4-1 last night in Edmonton.

Game Preview: Flames vs Minnesota Wild

The Flames welcome the Minnesota Wild to the Dome tonight for the team’s first of five meetings this season. Neither team has got off to a particular good start as both teams are on the outside looking in, on the top eight in the West.

Disappointing Finish Can't Deny The Talent

Red Wings fans are still upset at the way in which the historic 2011-2012 season came to a close. How can a team with one of the leading goaltenders and the current NHL record for consecutive home victories go 4-4-2 in their last 10 AND lose home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs?

The team took quite a hit after going through a series of momentum changing injuries to stars like Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen, Jimmy Howard and Nicklas Lidstrom. Some would even say that Howard hasn't been the same since the injury. That slump in the season wasn't a surprise.

It also didn't help that the Wings couldn't capitalize on some of their late season opportunities which includes them falling to the Columbus Blue Jackets in Columbus, and then losing at home to Nashville, New Jersey and Chicago. The loss in Columbus just emphasizes the team's biggest setback of the season. The Wing's finished with a 17-21-3 record when playing away from the Joe.

One Chance Is All It Takes

The Detroit Red Wings have one chance to make a statement to fellow playoff-runners, the New Jersey Devils. Tonight will be the lone time that the Wings and Devils will meet. After last season’s run and comparing their teams this season, it will be an interesting match-up.

Last season, Detroit won two of the only games played against the Devils. The Devils were able to score one goal each game, while the Wings soared at three and four goals a game. However, the season for the Wings has been a roller coaster. With recent injuries, the Wings have not been playing their best. The Wings have had a 4-4-2 record in their last ten games, while the Devils are looking a lot better with...

Up and Down week for team and the players

The Griffins had an up and down week with a win and a loss to San Antonio and a loss then a win against the Oklahoma City Barons. Along with the team, players are up and down with the Wings due to numerous injuries. Ty Conklin and Jordan Pearce were called up to the Red Wings Due to Howard and MacDonald’s injuries, Doug Janik was back from the Wings and in the lineup for the loss on Thursday to San Antonio. Brendan Smith was reassigned Saturday night to the Griffins but he had flight problems and could not make the game for Sunday. With Howard still out and MacDonald possibly out for the season the Griffs will be relying on Thomas McCollum and rookie Ramis Sadikov in net to finish t...

Datsyuk is Back for Game Tonight!

Detroit rounds up their road trip tonight, facing the San Jose Sharks at 10:30PM. Their last ten games have been quite rough, standing 3-6-1. San Jose is not all that much better at 3-4-3. Who will be able to come out on top in this last regular season meeting?

The Wings beat the Sharks in their last meeting on February 19th, where the Wings won their 23rd consecutive home game. However, the Sharks won two of the three meetings this season. The Wings have one major advantage. Two words: Pavel Datsyuk. That’s right, Datsyuk has announced his return to the ice for the game tonight and I could not be more thrilled. The injury stricken team has been suffering without him.

Kings seek home ice revenge against Detroit

Last time the Detroit Red Wings played the Los Angeles Kings, things ultimately went their way.

After being down 3-2 in the 2nd period, the Wings turned it up and got some late game heroics from Valterri Filppula and Darren Helm. On home ice, that seems to be the way the Wings get things done.

Now, the the 4th ranked Red Wings (Western conference) have to perform on the road, a task that has been less than stellar all season. The Kings will be looking to capitalize on the opportunity.

The Wings are not hopeless though, as they will have their all-star goalie Jimmy Howard back in net, after being out with an injured finger. Howard is third in the NHL in wins.

Detroit Cannot Prey On Pekka Rinne

Detroit falls short yet again in a loss against the Nashville Predators last night. Is the missing players hurting the Wings or is it more than that? Let’s evaluate the game.

The game started really well. The Wings came out really strong and played very aggressive. They ended the period trailing the Predators by one, but the playing style definitely did not reflect that. The Wings lead shots on goal 9 to 8. The first goal came from a wrist shot by Patric Hornqvist 7:30 into the first period. Gustav Nyquist had a bad give away and David Legwand took advantage of it. Legwand had a quick pass to Hornqvist, who scored the goal. Only 13 seconds af...

Injuries Are Mounting. Are you scared?

Lidstrom. Datsyuk. Howard. Bertuzzi. Ericsson. Kindl. Eaves. All banged up. Can the Detroit Red Wings win another Stanley Cup with their best defenseman, forward, and goalie out? Up until this point in the season, the Wings have been relatively healthy and have definitely played like it. Now, we are at a point where the “law of averages” has kicked in, and the once healthy Red Wings are starting to pile up injuries. Maybe the better question is, can the Wings win their division?

The Red Wings may play next with seven starters out of the lineup. That’s scary, even if we are talking about the 2002 Red Wings. Is this team getting old? Does Mike Babcock run them too ha...

Where Are They Now? Joey MacDonald

Former New York Islanders goaltender Joey MacDonald had to make a difficult career decision. At 31 years old, should he continue in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Detroit Red Wings as, essentially a career backup to Jimmy Howard, or take an offer to play in Russia?

On July 11, 2011, MacDonald chose to re-sign with the Red Wings and was assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

On September 7, 2011 a plane carrying the Russian hockey team; Lokomtiv Yaroslavi crashed just after take-off. The crash killed nearly the entire roster (only four players survived, all not on the plane) and the entire coaching staff.

The team that MacDonald decided not to sign with?
