It might have come against another one of the worse teams in the league, but who gives a damn.

The Capitals recorded their third win of the season and their only shutout of the year against the Florida Panthers with a 5-0 win (Caps win by 4+ goals and Papa Johns in the DC/MD/Northern VA area give you half price on your slice, look up the deal, y'all).

Failure to Develop a Blue Line May Have Cost the Flyers JvR

Saturday night against Carolina, the Flyers dressed Kimmo Timonen, Luke Schenn, Braydon Coburn, Nicklas Grossmann, Kurtis Foster, and Bruno Gervais as their defense.

All six shared one thing in common -- not a single one of them were drafted by the Flyers.

In fact, the Flyers have a consistent issue with things like that. Since the lost season of 2004-05, the Flyers have not gotten more than 150 games played from a defensemen they drafted and only one home grown defensemen has played more than 200 games in a Flyers uniform since that time, Randy Jones, an undrafted defender.

Capitals Re-Sign John Carlson

The Washington Capitals have signed Defenseman John Carlson, 22, to a six-year, $23.8 Million contract extension today. Carlson will earn $3.8 million in the 2012-2013 season and $4 million per year through the 2017-2018 season.

Carlson has 17 goals, 58 assists, 74 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating in 186 regular season games, as well as providing five goals and seven assists with a +3 plus/minus rating in 30 playoff games over the last three seasons.

Capitals GM George McPhee described Carlson’s benefit to the team in the press release.

Balance is good. It's good for a lot of things. It's good for tires. It's good on a beam. It's good on a seesaw.  Having balance on a seesaw is having two riders of near-equal weight who get to enjoy flinging themselves up into the air with the help of the weight of the other rider. Alex Semin is gone; what now for the Washington Capitals?

With a one-year deal worth $7 million, Alex Semin is headed to Raleigh to frustrate the living bejesus out of Carolina Hurricanes fans join Jordan Staal as part of a new-look offense for the Carolina Hurricanes.

It's a good deal for both parties. Semin, by hook (not the two-minute variety, with which Semin is very familiar) or crook gets his money and the team is only on the hook for one year. Not a bad deal for a boom-or-bust guy like Semin, even if he is coming off a bust season.

Now just where does that leave the Capitals?

They're not exactly up a creek with no paddle because it was pretty clear that Semin wanted to leave from season's end...

Caps blasted by Stars 5-2

The Caps headed into tonight's clash with the Dallas Stars as the only team with an undefeated home record at 6-0. 

That ended quickly as the Stars ambushed the Caps in the third period at Verizon Center tonight by scoring three consecutive goals to win 5-2. 

The Stars got three points from Jamie Benn, including a goal and two assists and Michael Ryder added two goals. The visiting Stars also got goals from Adam Burish and Eric Nystrom. 

Caps goals came from Alexander Semin, who opened the scoring for the Caps on the power play in the first and John Carlson, who ripped a laser by Lehtonen in the second at even-strength to tie the game at 2-2.
