How To Prepare For The Rest Of The Caps Season

Being a half-decent sports fan is about moderating expectations.

You don't want to be that guy or girl who goes into every season saying "this year is ours because reasons" because if you do, you'll wind up crying in the corner clutching your jersey and listening to sad Radiohead. You don't want that.

A 4-3 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh saw the Capitals slide to third in the Metropolitan division, their third loss in a row. It was a good effort by the visiting Caps but, like always, almost every Capitals goal saw a Penguins equalizer shortly after.

And on cue with 1:54 to go, the Penguins scored a gut-punch goal from rookie defenseman Olli...

Wayne Simmonds Has A Concussion

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds has a concussion, said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.

Simmonds was injured in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals. Simmonds took a John Erskine elbow to the face in the first period and did not return to the game.

Earlier today, Erskine was suspended three games.

Caps hold on in third against Flyers, win 3-2

The Capitals aren't in the basement anymore.

With a 1-1 score at the start of the third period, the Caps scored twice on the visiting Flyers and managed to hang on to it for the first time in three games, with the final score 3-2 in the home team's favor.

The win took the Caps from 15th in the East to 13th. Although it's not a huge leap, not being last anymore is just fine.

This game, a home game against a rivalry team after two come-from-ahead losses was a must-win game early in the season. The Flyers had been struggling similarly in the first weeks of the new season.

Spots that were problematic for the Caps started to look a lot better.

Simmonds Injured In Loss to Capitals

A cheap shot may have cost the Flyers another forward.

Wayne Simmonds was the victim of a vicious elbow by Capitals defenseman John Erskine and was knocked out of the Flyers 3-2 loss.

Simmonds was blindsided by Erskine while playing a loose puck. Erskine came up high with a deliberate elbow and caught Simmonds right in the face.

All-Time Islanders A to M

The Islanders will be embarking on their 40th season in the NHL once the puck drops in October. Throughout the 40 years 441 skaters, 44 goalies and 15 coaches have wore the traditional orange and blue and at some point the fisherman jerseys.

The list below is a collection of players, coaches and front office members who have best represented the Islanders throughout the last 40 years. The list goes from A to M, because of the size of the list it has been spilt into two posts. The second part of the list N to Z will be posted next week.

The Bell Centre welcomed back a familiar face on Wednesday night, as Roman Hamrlik made his return to Montreal for the first time since signing with the Capitals in the offseason.

First things first, though: a more unusual kind of retribution. Rene Bourque, just two games removed from a suspension for a hit on Washington's Nicklas Backstrom when he was still with the Calgary Flames, expected to be confronted regardless of his new uniform. Sure enough, barely a minute into the opening twenty, he went at it with the Caps' Matt Hendricks ....and that was that.
