The first period saw plenty of hits and fights between both sides. Matt Carkner fought Jay Rosehill just inside the Isles blue line, resulting in a win for the home team. Just a few minutes later, Kyle Okposo would drop the mitts with Braydon Coburn inside the Flyers zone. Not many punches were thrown, but KO would get the take down, allowing the Minnesota native to be showered with USA chants as he headed to the Isles penalty box.

The Islanders continued their 6 game road trip on Thursday night visiting the Tampa Bay Lightning and took a well-earned 2-1 shootout victory over the co-leaders of the Atlantic Division. On the current trip the Islanders have now recorded points in 4 of the 5 games.

The 2014 World Juniors hockey championship has come to a close, and when the dust cleared it was the underdog Finns walking home with the gold, Sweden taking silver and Russia ousting Canada for the bronze.  The tournament, which took place in Malmo, Sweden, featured several Hawks prospects, and provided a possible glimpse of the future for Chicago’s team.

Crawford returns in clash against Islanders

 

The Blackhawks (28-7-7) are ringing in the New Year with a familiar face finally back between the pipes.  Corey Crawford, who has been out since Dec. 17 with a lower-body injury, will be back in the lineup as the Blackhawks face the New York Islanders (13-21-7) in their first matchup in 2014.  The Hawks won the previous match 3-2 in Chicago, with Michal Handzus netting the game winner.

Game Preview: Isles Look to Play A Full 60 Against The Wings

The Islanders (10-20-7) come limping into this contest, desperate for a win, after failing to record a victory in 14 of their last 16 games. The Wings have not been too successful themselves of late as they have been completely ravaged by injuries. Detroit (17-12-9) is just 3-5-2 in their last 10 games and their normally strong home ice advantage is anything but with a record of 6-9-6.
