The New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals took the ice on Thursday night in Washington D.C. for their third and final meeting of the 2012 - 2013 season. With the Islanders being victorious in the first two matchups, the red-hot Caps would take this one in a 2-1 shootout.

After the Capitals scored at the end of the first period, it wouldn't be until the end of the third when Kyle Okposo tied the game 1-1. After an incredible showcase by goaltenders Evgeni Nabakov and Braden Holtby, Alexander Ovechkin would notch the lone shootout tally to send the Isles off with only a point. As the season winds down, a playoff berth for the Islanders becomes more realistic with each passing day. For a team that has played so poorly during stretches this year, they still find themselves in the mix for a playoff spot.

The Islanders are playing meaningful games in April and shortened season or not, that is a big deal.

They took the ice on Tuesday night to face a Jets team that was handled by the Rangers the night before. The Islanders took a bus ride over from New Jersey and looked to remain hot. The excited Isles took the ice at home after beating the Devils just 24 hours prior.

The New York Islanders continue their fight for a playoff spot as they play host to the visiting Southeast Division leading Winnipeg Jets.

The Islanders, having went 3-1 on their recent road trip, look to keep the fire going at home Tuesday night. While impressive on the road, boasting an 11-5-1 record, they have struggled mightily at home posting a 6-11-2 mark. Even mediocre home ice play and the Isles are comfortably in the Stanley Cup chase.

As of now, the Isles are still deadlocked with the New York Rangers, who have a game in hand over the Isles, at 37 points. Both teams find themselves two points behind the 7th place New Jersey Devils.

The New York Islanders stole a 3-1 road victory over the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center Monday night. It wasn’t the prettiest win, but the Islanders showed that despite occasional defensive lapses and a lackluster overall effort in the second period, they were able to get a result against their division rivals.

It would almost be fair to categorize the replay of this game as NSFW.

Playing in front of a sold-out crowd at The Rock, the Islanders continued their stretch of solid play on the road this season, even if they aren’t concerned with style points. New York improved to 11-5-1 overall away from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, proving once again that they’re capable of winning games in hostile environments.

As reported previously this week, the New York Islanders locked up defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky with a two-year contract extension worth $9.5 million.

GM Garth Snow has once again managed to acquire a valuable veteran through the trade market and convince him to stay longer than planned after he previously tried to avoid joining the team (Photo Credit: Robert Kowal/Flickr).

The first player that went through a similar scenario was goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, who is also playing in the final year of his contract. However, it has already been reported by Arthur Staple of Newsday that he appears to have an interest with staying with the team.

The Islanders face the Pittsburgh Penguins this afternoon for the 5th and final time this season. After winning the first matchup, the Isles fell to the Pens in the three following games.

The Islanders come into today's 1pm matinee game at Energy Consol Centre tied for 8th place in the Eastern Conference with the New York Rangers. Thanks to a huge shootout victory against the Flyers on Thursday night, New York is currently on their best win streak of the season at 3.

With the Islanders fresh off of their biggest win of the year in DC, they moved towards Philadelphia with the 8th seed in sight. Their eyes were certainly on the scoreboard to see what the Rangers were doing in Ottawa.

However, they needed to take control and take care of business in Philly first. Two important points were on the line.

Playing in Philly has been nothing short of a nightmare in recent years for the orange and blue. So when the road Isles went down 2-0 early, no one could have expected a come back could be in the works.

But these Islanders have shown a lot of grit and persistence on the road. They battled back behind Colin McDonald's two goal party.
