After a pre-game tribute to former King, Ian Laperriere and a moment of silence for Los Angeles sports titan, Jerry Buss, the Kings got straight to business.

Dustin Brown opened the scoring 58 seconds into the game. Justin Williams recovered the puck on a scramble at the top of the offensive zone and delivered a pass to Brown waiting in the slot. Brown’s one-timer rocketed past an oscillating Semyon Varlamov.

On the last leg of their extended road trip, the Kings did something that has only happened once before this season—win consecutive games. Following a 3-2 win over Edmonton on Tuesday night, the squad finished the Alberta sweep with a 3-1 victory against the hapless Calgary Flames Wednesday evening at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Los Angeles now pulls within one point of the Dallas Stars as they attempt to scratch and claw their way out of the Pacific Division cellar and to be sure, it’s better late than never.

Preview: The Kings (5-6-2; 12 points) head into Edmonton with the second worst record in the Western Conference. A physical 3-2 loss against the Blackhawks on Sunday should focus and motivate the Kings who have had success at Rex Place (7-0-2) over the past couple of seasons. The Kings (3-5-1; 8 points) have a quick turn around after a devastating 3-2 loss in Detroit when they head to St. Louis to take on the Blues (6-4-1; 13 points) tonight at 5. The Kings have dropped their past two games and are 1-3 entering the final leg of their road trip. After a red hot start the Blues are on a four game skid earning only one point. St. Louis lost Saturday night 6-5 (SO) to Anaheim and hope to end their four game home stand on a positive note.

Another slow first period put the Kings in a hole at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

A Slava Voynov goal was disallowed when Anze Kopitar was called for incidental contact with Columbus goalie, Steve Mason. The Kings entered the game 2-3-2 and in 14th place in the Western conference with road games in Detroit, St. Louis, and Chicago looming tonight's game was crucial. Stanley Cup hangovers have proved to be problems of varying degrees for teams coming off of a championship. The defending Stanley Cup Champions finally have a win to call their own. It appears as though head coach Darryl Sutter was right all along—there was nothing to be overly concerned with. Except that power play, which once again failed to register a tally, bringing the team’s total man-advantage record to 0-23.

The boys are back in town and sales will soon increase at Chipotles, Mr. Macs Canteen and dozens of restaurants in the area as the players prepare for the upcoming season.

With the recent huge contracts signed by Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Quick, some pundits have started to speculate. They wonder whether or not this is good for any player, even if that player helped his team to a Stanley Cup and has a room full of hardware.

Milford, CT is a typical blue-collared New England town. Like many, it has its’ green (the second largest in New England), a rich Revolutionary War history (Liberty Rock) and the strip malls, auto dealerships and struggling franchises that dot the Rte. 1 landscape from Maine to Florida. Milford is also the home of Schick, BIC, Subway, PEZ (actually nearby Orange, CT) and a guy named Jonathan Quick. It is also the winter home of most of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

In the photo (Wikipedia/Benutzer:makemake) you see an aerial view of the Milford harbor. The ubiquitous island, top center, is Charles Island, a bird sanctuary and well-known sight to most Sound Tigers players. The players often rent beach cottages along the stretch of beach facing the island during the winter months and for good reason. Many of these homes demand $1800 per week and more during the summer months, off-season these same homes are available for a small fraction of that amount. This is where they pool their resources and form what can best be described as ‘frat-houses’ where life long friendships are born. In April of 2010, after being abducted, I was given a personal tour of one.
