Sharks Wary of Streak

The San Jose Sharks have knocked the Detroit Red Wings out of the playoffs in the Western Conference Semifinals two years in a row. Their regular season success has been dominant against Detroit, and when the Sharks visit Joe Louis Arena tomorrow, they know what's at stake.

The Red Wings have not lost at home for 22 consecutive games. Their record at JLA is an amazing 25-2-1.

Expect the Sharks to proceed with caution as Detroit has been unstoppable at home. Mike Babcock has even said he doesn't think the Wings are playing their best hockey, just managing to win games.

The Red Wings will get a huge boost with the return of goaltender Jimmy Howard from a brok...

Wings Link Checks 01/18/12

The Detroit Red Wings had a good week, getting wins against the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres and Dallas Stars. They set a record if you didn't hear, and there were some other milestones as well. Here's what we have for you in this edition of Link Checks:

Wings Link Checks 01/13/12

The Detroit Red Wings are in a three way battle for first spot in the Western Conference with the slumping Chicago Blackhawks and the surging St. Louis Blues. The Wings played three games this week; a 3-2 overtime win in Chicago, a 5-1 loss to the Islanders and a 3-2 shootout win over Phoenix in Hockeytown. Here are some interesting stories from The Checking Line and elsewhere about your favourite team.

From The Checking Line - Red Wings Edition:

Kyle Busch tells you why Jimmy Howard and Pavel Datsyuk are All Stars but Nicklas Lidstrom was left out

Rachel Bellono's recap of yesterday's 3-2 win over Phoenix, Howard's 100th career win and her thoughts on a...

Howard, Datsyuk Earn ASG Spot

The Detroit Red Wings will send two players to the NHL All Star Game in Ottawa. Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard were both chosen to play, Datsyuk for his turn around season and dynamite skill set and Howard for his amazingly All-Star-like play this season.

When hearing of the exclusion of captain Nicklas Lidstrom, I was outraged. I then heard that he asked Brendan Shanahan not to play, and to be honest, good for him. He knows he should be there, but at 41 years old he isn't getting any younger. A little break will benefit him and in turn the Red Wings. The All Star game isn't really a defenceman's game anyway.

Lidstrom addressed t...

Detroit Chokes in Classic Fashion

In my world, the Detroit Red Wings won tonight by a score of 3-2 over the Nashville Predators. In real life, NOT TRUE.

Shea Weber scored twice in the last two minutes of the game and Nashville somehow won 4-3. They were out-shot, out-chanced and out-classed until the last two minutes and the Wings don't get a single point for it. That's what happens when you let your foot off the gas pedal.

So here's how this is going to work; I'm going to write an honest game review until the 3-2 mark, and then it's rant time. Fair enough? Here we go.

Detroit opened the scoring with Tomas Holmstrom on the powerplay; a typical Homer rebound garbage goal. Henrik Zetter...

Change is Good

There are issues in Detroit with a certain hockey team that most people will not notice. Currently sitting in a playoff spot, the Red Wings look like there aren’t many issues facing them as of now. I’m here to tell you otherwise.

A stat that I looked up might not be alarming to some, but it proves the point I have been making about this team since a few weeks into the season; consistency.

Taking into account the whole season, Detroit has not lost or won just one game in a row. It has always been two-plus losses or 2-plus wins, never a single tick in the ‘W’ or ‘L’ column. To me, this clearly whispers that there are some inconsis...

Wings Top Avs, Parise an Option?

The Detroit Red Wings took down the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 yesterday at the Joe, led by Johan Franzen's hat trick. Jimmy Howard recorded the win for Detroit, and Nick Lidstrom scored his team leading 6th goal of the year early in the first period. Dan Cleary also scored for Detroit. Gabriel Landeskog and Milan Hejduk scored for the Avs.

While the Wings won decisively, they started slow, and in my perspective gave the puck away too many times. Eventually they settled down after Lidstrom scored from the slot, and then Franzen got lucky a couple times. His first was a 'deflection' off a Valterri Filppula shot that just happened to clip his stick, the second was a beautiful ...

Wings Score Five Goals in One Game!

Yesterday, the Detroit Red Wings scored five goals in a game, the first time it's happened in a while. Nicklas Lidstrom scored twice, Nik Kronwall, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen also scored and Jimmy Howard stopped 22 shots in a 5-0 shutout of the Anaheim Ducks.

Detroit finally snapped their six game losing streak by peppering Jonas Hiller and Dan Ellis with 50 shots, a season high for the Wings. Franzen finally had a shot on goal, registering six for the night and finishing off a broken play by Ian White with Dan Ellis way out of position into an empty net.

The Red Wings dominated the Ducks from the start, and didn't give them much opportunity to do anything off...

Kronwall Named Assistant Captain

When Kris Draper retired in the summer, it opened up a spot for a player to have an 'A' patched on their jersey. Forward-crusher Niklas Kronwall will wear it with pride.

Kronwall will be in the familiar rotation of three assistant captains with Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.

At the beginning of the season, I went through some of the possible candidates for being a captain and a few that I mentioned were Kronwall, Darren Helm and Tomas Holmstrom.

Since Holmstrom is on the decline and he is an informal leader anyway because of his experience, I thought Kronwall or Helm would be a good fit; Helm for his dogged determination, making teammates want to emulate hi...
