Game Day: New York Rangers @ Phoenix Coyotes

After a disappointing 4-1 showing against Anaheim, the Phoenix Coyotes rebounded nicely against the Edmonton Oilers, winning that game by a score of 4-2 after having fired 42 shots at Devan Dubnyk, ending a three-game skid in the process. Tonight, a rare visitor enters Jobing.com Arena as the New York Rangers and the Coyotes face off exactly a year and a day since the Rangers rallied to take the December 16th, 2010 meeting in a shootout, 4-3.

The Rangers are coming off a 4-1 loss against St. Louis but are 6-3-1 in their last ten games. After this game, they move on to New Jersey, then play host to the Islanders and Flyers before heading to Washington and Flor...

Preview: The New York Islanders return home to Nassau Coliseum to take on their all-time rival, the New York Rangers.

The Islanders are coming off a western road trip which saw them give up a 3 goal lead in an overtime loss to the Avalanche, and a clinic put on by the Canucks in a loss to Vancouver. The Islanders have played better hockey since changing up their offensive lines a few games ago, putting up more scoring chances more consistently. However, they haven’t been able to translate the better play into wins. A win tonight against the Rangers would mean even more than usual, as it would end a slide of losing efforts.

A fine week of hockey for the Rangers is in the books after Friday's throttling of the Carolina Hurricanes at MSG. A four goal third period broke open what had been a tightly contested game through two periods and led the Blue Shirts to their sixth straight win. Brad Richards, Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky each finished with a goal and an assist for the home team.

Sean Avery got the ball rolling with his first goal of the year in the first period on a breakaway. Jeff Woywitka chipped the puck up the ice and past a Hurricanes defender springing Avery on the break. After opening the campaign winless through three, the Rangers broke the ice with road wins over Vancouver and Calgary. The team then turned in an uninspired effort against Edmonton in a 2 - 0 loss to the young Oilers Saturday. They conclude their long road journey tomorrow in Winnipeg before heading home for the season opener at MSG Thursday against the Leafs.

Getting a couple of wins was nice and a 2 - 2 - 2 record to start given the difficulty of the travel schedule isn't so bad but we still haven't seen the team play like the squad we expected to see. Usually I like to be as original and creative as possible both when naming and deciding on a theme for a blog post. Sometimes though it is just better to keep it simple. That's the case here.

I can't tell you how many "good, bad and ugly" style posts I've read before but that is the perfect theme for today's blog.

I waited until today to post anything on the Rangers start since the first two "regular season" games in Europe felt more like an extension of the exhibition season than the stat of the regular one.
