Last Sunday on the CBC broadcast of the Habs' win over the Jets, the network aired a sit down interview between Elliotte Friedman and Carey Price. The Canadiens' goaltender proceeded to describe this season for his team in one (and a half) words: "rollercoaster."

Well, that's an understatement. The Canadiens have had so many highs and lows this season that you'd think they were a malfunctioning hot air balloon. It really is the perfect way to describe them. On one hand, you have a team that's essentially one Hurricanes' win away (don't worry, those aren't coming any easier either...

Those who follow hockey, and specifically the Montreal Canadiens, know perhaps all too well that February 5th, 2012 has a particular meaning other than Super Bowl XLVI. It is, of course, in reference to February 5th, 2011, which was the last time that highest-paid Hab Scott Gomez scored a goal.

In the days leading up to Gomezversary, many of these followers as well as those of rival teams have had their fun in cheering/jeering the Canadiens' number 11. But it's all just an eight-million dollar mask covering up the real issue: Montreal has lost every game coming out of the All-Star Break, most recently a paltry showing...

The Buffalo Sabres were in town on Tuesday night for a Northeast Division clash with the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens, just two points up from the lowly Sabres, were unable to hold off their division rivals in a game that saw the Habs lose by a score of 3-1. The Sabres, who were 14th in the Eastern Conference heading into this one, are now tied with the Habs, but thanks to having two more wins will be ahead of them in the standings.

Detroit’s winning streak ends at 7 tonight when the Wings fall short in a 7 to 2 loss against the Montréal Canadiens. Was it because the Wings were lacking their trusty captain Nicklas Lidstrӧm? You decide.

First Period: It took about five minutes for a point to get on the scoreboard and that point was not a Red Wings point as hoped for. Montréal had the first point with a goal by Bourque. Five minutes later, Emelin scores his first goal and gives Montréal a 2 to 0 lead over the Wings. Within the last ten minutes of the first period, Montréal’s Desharnais and Plekanec both scored. The unfortunate thing about this game - Nicklas Lidstrom did not play at the Bell Centre. The stalwart on defense for the Red Winds missed only his 31st game in 21 years. Unfortunate that in this unbalanced schedule he missed the only time he was to play in Montreal in a couple of seasons. Campoli and Nokelainen were the scratches for the hometown heroes on this game.

The first period began with the home side showing speed and intensity - something that has been sorely lacking on a lot of the games in the first half of this season. The Bell Centre welcomed back a familiar face on Wednesday night, as Roman Hamrlik made his return to Montreal for the first time since signing with the Capitals in the offseason.

First things first, though: a more unusual kind of retribution. Rene Bourque, just two games removed from a suspension for a hit on Washington's Nicklas Backstrom when he was still with the Calgary Flames, expected to be confronted regardless of his new uniform. Sure enough, barely a minute into the opening twenty, he went at it with the Caps' Matt Hendricks ....and that was that.

First game in the Rene Bourque era in a rare Sunday evening game in Montreal. The scratches for the evening are Petteri Nokelainen and Chris Campoli. The Habs went with seven defensemen and eleven forwards once again. Peter Budaj started against the number one team in the eastern conference.

First period started with the Habs putting on some pressure on the Rangers and Max Pacioretty scored with assists going to Erik Cole and David Desharnais. There was a ceremonial face off in the Bell Centre featuring Yvan Cournoyer, Paul Henderson and Vladislav Tretiak. Very nice ovation for the two hall of famers and one that possibly should be in the hallowed halls. The scratches for this game were Yannick Weber and Peteri Nokelainen.

The The much anticipated follow up game to the Eller game started off slowly for the Habs. The Lightning scored the dreaded first goal by Vincent Lecavalier with assists by Eric Brewer and Dominic Moore. The Habs did not have any shots until approximately the six minute mark. After scoring the first goal, the Lightning went into their defensive shell.

To judge any team and organization all you must do is look at one game. A nondescript game, where nothing is at stake and nothing out of the normal is happening. When it’s just one game out of the 82 a team plays, that is when you can evaluate a team. How does a player play when nothing is on the line and when there is no pressure? The Montreal Canadiens will look to bounce back from a slightly embarrassing 3-2 shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday evening, as they prepare to face the Vancouver Canucks at the Bell Centre.

Logic would dictate that the Habs will be looking at another loss after tonight's game, but this team doesn't exactly follow the laws of physics. If this season has proven anything, it's that when their backs are up against the wall (i.e., the coach's job seems to be in jeopardy), this team will bust out a win against the most unlikely opponent. It happened in Winnipeg when the Canadiens beat the Jets in their long-awaited home opener. It happened...
