Islanders Defeat Panthers 5-2 In Final Home Game Of The Regular Season

When the horn sounded at the end of the third period at the Nassau Coliseum on Tuesday night, Islanders fans rejoiced as their home squad defeated the visiting Florida Panthers 5-2. The Isles skaters removed their jerseys and signed them for the lucky fans who won them as a prize at the end of the game.

Typically, this is a moment at the end of the Islanders season filled with "better luck next year's" and "thanks for supporting us as we rebuild our team." But instead, this time, fans were salivating for more as the Islanders continued to tighten their grasp on their first playoff berth in six years.

"Everyone's been telling me how loud this arena can be," said Matt Martin...

In a truly critical contest, the New York Islanders defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Tuesday night, putting the Flyers 7 points away from the Islanders, who now sit in in the 7th spot in the Eastern Conference. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak at Nassau Coliseum.

After the Flyers committed an icing, took a timeout, and failed to get the puck deep when play continued, the Islanders rushed the puck up the other way. New York will look to take advantage of its recent run of good form in front of their hometown fans against a struggling Philadelphia squad.

Pittsburgh Earns Record Win As Islanders Squander Opportunities

The victory, Pittsburgh's 15th straight, was also a record night in another way: the Pens have extended their club record shutout streak. The Pens shutout streak now extends over 208 minutes as Pittsburgh has won the last three by shutout.

Pens netminder Tomas Vokoun has extended his personal best shutout streak to just shy of 163 minutes.

The game could have went another way though.

DiPietro - Re-Born In Bridgeport?

DeSimone approached the net on DiPietro’s paddle side patiently waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger. Not known for his patience and the consummate risk taker, DiPietro used his paddle to swat the puck harmlessly to the far-side wall before the trigger could be pulled allowing the team to maintain it’s one goal advantage.

GAME RE-CAP NY Islanders 3 - Washington Capitals 2

The Islanders opened up their four game road trip with a big win against the Capitals in D.C. This victory put them, if only temporarily, tied for the last playoff spot. They played with desperation, taking the play to the Capitals immediately.

Around the four minute mark, Marty Reasoner, standing alone in front misses a point blank shot. The Isles kept up the pressure and at 6:25 of the first Grabner nets a beauty on a nice play from Keith Aucoin. Isles 1 Caps 0

It's Time To Buy On The Island

This is the year that the New York Islanders should look to be buyers at the trade deadline.

It is only just eight days away, and the Islanders presently sit with 31 points, just two shy from tying the New York Rangers for the eighth and final playoff spot with only 16 games remaining in the regular season.

Typically at this juncture, the Isles are on the verge of collapsing into the final three spots of the Eastern Conference and increasing their chances of winning the draft lottery. Although that is still a frightening scenario that can still play out for Garth Snow's squad, it is time for the Isles GM to make a statement that the rebuild is over.

A Look At The Islanders Right Wingers "Down On The Farm"

Ullstrom is most effective when he's skating hard and working the forecheck to create turnovers. When he is on, he's also a pest and easily gets under the skin of opponents, all the while playing a clean game.

When Ullstrom is doing these little things, that's when he is creating his best offense. Forcing turnovers and converting them to offense is the hallmark of the young Swede.
