Wings Help Howard Reach 100th Career Win Against Phoenix

Detroit Red Wings steal their 13th consecutive home game from the Phoenix Coyotes!

First Period: The Wings came out strong at the start of the period. It took 9 minutes of playing before a goal was made. Phoenix was the one to steal the first goal, which was scored by Vrbata. After Vrbata’s goal, the Wings seemed to have a rough second half of the period. The last couple minutes had good pressure from the Wings though. With only 51 seconds left of the first, the Wings finally got a shot past Smith. Filppula made a beautiful goal with an assist from White. The period ended at a 1 to 1 tie. SOG: 13 Detroit vs 9 Phoenix.

Second Period: The...

Doughty Scores OT Winner, Quick Records 6th Shutout in Win

For a game that looked so lackluster one minute and then so well-played the next, Drew Doughty’s controversial overtime winner may be the most fitting way for it to end.

Thirty-eight seconds into the extra frame, Doughty drove towards the left side of the net and switched back to the forehand inches in front of Phoenix’s Mike Smith to slide the puck past his leg. He jarred the net loose with his large frame upon falling, but after review, the net never came completely out of its moorings. Jack...

Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes @ Nashville Predators

Last night the Phoenix Coyotes almost let one slip away, going up 3-0 on the Chicago Blackhawks before being forced into a shootout situation that saw Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Radim Vrbata and Mike Smith step up and seal the deal for a 4-3 win. Tonight, they face the Nashville Predators for the last time until March 12th, 2012, and despite their 14-9-3 record, are at least in some part conscious of the last not-too-distant time they faced off against them--a Pekka Rinne lights out night that handed them a 3-0 loss.

This is the third game in four nights for the Coyotes, and they have a date with the Detroit Red Wings to look forward to on Thursday.  The Predators have had a to...

Game Day: Philadelphia Flyers @ Phoenix Coyotes

The first matchup featuring the Phoenix Coyotes and departed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov didn't amount to a result they liked, what with Matt Read scoring the game-winning goal with just 18.6 seconds remaining in the final frame. Now, in their own barn, the Coyotes are looking for proper revenge. Problem is, they may not even get it as Sergei Bobrovsky might get the start in goal for the Flyers as they visit Jobing.com Arena.

The Flyers last faced another former team of Bryzgalov's, Anaheim, less than 24 hours ago. The Ducks got the jump on them with three goals, but the Flyers came back to take the game in overtime, 4-3. Phoenix is coming off a 1-0 loss against Winnipeg ...

Jets Hang On For 1-0 Win Over Coyotes

Shane Doan made his first appearance in a regular season NHL game in Winnipeg since the Jets played their final game in 1996. Although his team was booed relentlessly throughout the game, the 1st round pick of the Winnipeg Jets of '96 was given a standing ovation during the 1st period. It wasn't enough however, as the Jets (2.0) held on for a 1-0 win over the Coyotes.

The crowd was easily the 6th man on the ice in the early stages of the first period. For the first time in recent memory, the entire opposing team was booed whenever they touched the puck, and the negative engery seemed to effect the Coyotes when handling the puck in their own zone.

The Jets applied ...

Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes @ Winnipeg Jets

The Jets: New Edition host the former version of themselves tonight, in the second and final meeting between the two but one that is sure to be more raucous than usual at the MTS Centre, where Shane Doan will return for the first time since a pre-season game against Calgary in 2008 (but before that, 1996). The game will get underway at 8:30 p.m. EST as the Coyotes will look to continue their recent play that saw them rebound from an awful showing against the Canucks in a 5-0 loss to beat Dallas 3-0 and Chicago 4-1. Had it not been for Patrick Sharp's late goal in the third period, Mike Smith would have earned two straight shutouts.

Winnipeg will spend most of its December a...

Game Day: Dallas Stars @ Phoenix Coyotes

With few words in the way of explanations or possible excuses (too much turkey?), the Phoenix Coyotes will look to rebound from a 5-0 loss against the Vancouver Canucks as early as tonight as they face the Dallas Stars.

"We didn't start very good, we didn't have a good middle and we didn't end very good. So that pretty much sums it up right there." - Dave Tippett [1]

Dallas also played last night, as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated them in the shootout, 4-3. Joffrey Lupul scored the goal that would eventually stand as the difference-maker between the two teams.

With that in mind, ironically, the story between these two teams t...

Game Day: Vancouver Canucks @ Phoenix Coyotes

The Vancouver Canucks and Phoenix Coyotes come from similar situations in both the Northwest and Pacific divisions, where even if wins do come on a regular basis, it's pretty hard to tell.  Despite having won four of their last six games, Phoenix sits seventh in the Western Conference and second-to-last in their own division, whereas the Stanley Cup finalists have won five of seven and aren't even in the playoffs as they sit in 11th spot, 3rd in the Northwest.

Last season these two teams split the series, each grabbing two wins in their opponent's rink (Phoenix won 3-1 and 3-2 at Rogers Arena, while Vancouver took the games at Jobing.com Arena by scores of 4-3 ...

Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes @ Washington Capitals

There wasn't much love lost between the Phoenix Coyotes and Washington Capitals when they last met on Valentine's Day, as Phoenix took the win by a count of 3-2.  Washington is currently in the middle of a 3-6-1 stretch of ten that most recently saw them come up flat in Toronto, scoring only one goal against the Leafs' seven.  Phoenix's road trip thus far has been much of the opposite, as the Flyers were their only loss since they last left Jobing.com Arena.

Washington maintains a winning record at home (6-1-1), but five of the eight last games featuring them and the Coyotes have been decided by only one goal.  And as good as Mike Smith has been t...

Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes @ Philadelphia Flyers

The Coyotes held on after scoring two quick goals in the first period and seeing two quick ones scored on them to edge the Leafs in a shootout on Tuesday, 3-2.

They have now entered into Bryzpalooza.

With all the focus surrounding the former Coyotes' goaltender that famously left the desert in favour of signing a deal that would bring him 10 million dollars this season, their current man between the pipes continues to pick up wins.  Mike Smith improved his record to 7-0-2 in his last nine starts and now faces the highest-scoring team in the league.

The Flyers are two points behind the Penguins for the lead in that division as well as the entire Ea...
