Islanders End Slide, Defeat Canadiens

The Islanders scored four goals in the second period and held off some late game pressure and defeated the Montreal Canadiens by a score of 4-3.   Rick DiPietro got the win in relief of Evgeni Nabokov, who left the ice just 7:55 into the first period due to an apparent lower body injury.  Nabokov is said to have a hamstring issue, and will be evaluated today.

The first shot against DiPietro came on a power play, and as has been the Islanders luck so far this season, the shot beat him.  However, in a new turn of events for the Islanders and their luck, this time the post was there to back DiPietro up, and the Islanders killed off the power play unscathed.

Habs Stink Up Long Island; But What's The Bigger Picture?

The Montreal Canadiens are wearing me out this season. If any of the other authors on the site are reading this, they're probably going to kill me for speaking to you, the readers, in the first person while I write a game recap, but honestly, this is kind of a special case. This article, or rather blog (screw it, rant), is not meant as a straightforward game recap or analysis. There's a much bigger problem plaguing this team than what last night's horrid loss to the Isles may have even indicated, and it's about time that problem was addressed.

For 19 games now, we've been going through the motions, recapping and previewing game...

Post Game Carolina Hurricanes Into A Game Day New York Islanders

Call The Hurricanes In When You Need An Easy Win

Carolina Hurricanes 0 - Montreal Canadiens 4

Throughout the season each team circles certain games on the schedule as rivalry tilts or games that have special meaning.  On the other hand there are the games that have no extra motivation other than the points.  Well the game last night was just that.

Over the past few years, playing the Carolina Hurricanes has become that.  I would rank a game against the Hurricanes in Montreal the hardest ticket to sell.  And then add the fact that the Habs have to fly out to Long Island to play the back end of two games in two nights, a lackluster performance would have...

Game Day : Hurricanes @ Habs

The Caroline Hurricanes (6-9-3) are in town tonight to face off against the Montreal Canadiens (7-7-3).  This will mark the first time these teams meet this season and  to make matters more interesting, this will be Erik Cole's first encounter with his former team after being aquired by the Habs during the off season.

The Habs have won two of their last three games, with both wins coming in overtime.  As character building as that may be, the Habs are still lacking consistency and the ability to close out a game.  Two nights ago they gave up a 2-0 lead against Buffalo, and ended up losing to them in the shootout.

Carey Price shared his frustratio...

Sabres Snatch Success in Shootout

A tale of two games in one. One in which the Habs dominated and the other where the team sat back and allowed the Sabres not only back in the game but lead to the eventual loss in a shootout.

In the first two periods the Habs dominated the Sabres and the player of the game was none other than Erik Cole. He played a whale of a game in regulation, finishing checks, going to the net and scoring a rare power play goal. The Sabres had no answer to the line of Cole, Pacioretty and Desharnais in regularion. They were buzzing the net and creating chances. Spacek also played a heck of a game until he got injured in the middle of the game. Engqvist also played decently until he got injured by...

Game Day : Sabres @ Habs

It's a divisional showdown in Habs nation tonight where the Buffalo Sabres are ready to take on the Montreal Canadiens.

With Ryan Miller out of the lineup due to a disgusting hit from Bruins forward Milan Lucic, the Sabres will be rolling with Jhonas Enroth who, even before this incident occured, was creating some goaltender controversy in Buffalo.  While Ryan Miller has struggled in the first month of the season, Enroth has excelled.  Enroth has already won 5 of the 7 games he's appeared in and has a Sv% of .944.  Habs fans are no stranger to goalie controversy, having seen Jaroslav Halak almost take Carey Prices job away from him a few year...

Pacioretty Pops Puck Past Pekka

Overtime is becoming a friend to the Habs on this road trip. Two games two overtime victories against western conference teams. Peter Budaj, playing in his second game of the season was sensational stopping 25 of the 26 shots he faced in a fast paced entertaining game.

The Nashville Predators played the 1000th game in their history. Barry Trotz also was coaching on this mile-stone night - only the fourth man in the history of the NHL to coach 1000 games with the same team. The others are Al Arbour - Islanders, Lindy Ruff (Sabres), Billy Reah (Blackhawks).

The Habs out played the Predators in the first period - skating and passing with authority and totally dominati...

Game Day: Montreal Canadiens Vs. Nashville Predators

Montreal Canadiens Vs. Nashville PredatorsBridgestone Arena

Nashville, Tennessee

Most observers would say that there isn’t too much that is similar between the Montreal Canadiens and the Nashville Predators.  The Habs are the most storied franchise in the NHL and the Preds were part of the late 90s Bettman era expansion into non hockey markets.  The Habs have won cups while the Preds haven’t.  I could go on and on but interestingly there are three things that make both teams very similar.

Coach Jacques Martin is closing in on coaching 1300 games in the league.   That accomplishment hasn’t been achieved by too many people.  Martin ...

It's Not About Being Pretty

Montreal Canadiens 3 Phoenix Coyotes 2 (OT)The Habs Get A Needed Win On The Road

When the season schedule is released some games jump out at you.  There are some games that excite you.  There are some games that you plan for.  And then there was last night’s game.  A game in Phonenix on a Thursday night in the middle of November which comprises one of the 82 the Habs will play.   Playing the Coyotes in Phoenix has become the least exciting part of any teams’ season.

So, all you can hope for is an easy win and to get out of Arizona without any injuries.  Last night’s win wasn’t easy.  It wasn’t pr...

Game Day : Habs @ Coyotes

The Habs travel to the dessert to face off against the Phoenix Coyotes.   The last 7 times these two teams played each other, the Habs have walked away with the victory.  With a struggle filled start, I don't like the Habs chances at making it 8 straight.

The Phoenix Coyotes look to already be playing in mid season form.  Veterans Ray Whitney and Shane Doan are off to incredible starts.  In 13 games played Whitney has 14 points and Doan has 10.  Let's not forget to mention the explosive Radim Vrbata, who has 12 points.  While Vrbata may not make the score sheet every night, you can count on his explosive streaks to help keep the Coyotes in the m...
