Predators: Contender or Pretender?

Is this the year the Preds finally make a statement in the playoffs or is it just going to be another disappointment? This year has generated a lot of optimism in the fans of the Nashville Predators. After last year’s defeat to the eventual Stanley-cup champions the team felt like they needed to prove something to everyone. So in the off-season a lot of changes were made to the team in trading Hamuis, Arnott and Ellis away and getting O’Brien, Kostitsyn and Lombardi to strengthen the team. As it currently stands after 51 games into the season the Predators have 61 points good for 4th in the Western conference. Currently on pace to finish with home-ice advantage in the pla...

Weber or Suter?

This is a question the Nashville Predators will have to face soon as both are coming up to the end of their current contracts with the team. Weber who is due to become an RFA at the end of this season and Suter who is a UFA at the end of next season. Now you may be wondering why I would start asking this question now when Suter isn’t gone for another year, well there is a simple answer to that and it is that I don’t believe the Predators can afford to keep both of them together unless one or both take a pay cut to stay on the team. The two together could be argued as one of the top pairings in the NHL currently but what we have to look at here is which would do better without th...

Colin Wilson Stepping Up

There’s a lot of pressure being a 7th overall pick in a draft, but probably a little more so when you’re instantly expected to be an offensive leader on a team that doesn’t have a whole lot of offense to begin with. This year has been a tough one for Wilson, being in his first full NHL season and having to adjust to all the travel can be difficult for a new player especially one coming out of college. Now this isn’t his first season in the NHL as he did play 35 games with the Predators last year, but broken up by injuries and being sent down to Milwaukee. Wilson last year damaged his groin area and played a majority of the year injured until finally doctors were able to ...

Sergei’s Attitude Adjusted?

When Sergei Kostitsyn was first traded to Nashville for Ellis and Boyd there was both optimism and uncertainty within the fans of the Predators. They had virtually traded two players who were going to leave the team regardless on July 1st and go into free agency for a player who was a RFA and had potential but also some bad history. Fans were hoping that moving away from his brother Andrei and locating to a team that generally flow under the radar would help him become the hockey player he had shown promises of becoming. Sergei Kostitsyn was drafted in the 2005 draft by Montreal and was taken 200th overall in the seventh round. The year after he was drafted he posted 131 point...

Dissecting the Predators: Part 2 of 5 Defence

The Nashville Predators are known around the league for their ability to develop defenseman. It is their bread and butter and what their team has always been about. With the ability to develop some of the best defence in the league it is no wonder that this year’s D cops is a little on the younger side and they are only going to get better as the years pass. This year the defence has had its struggles but for the most part is still arguably the most important part of the team. The Players: The defence is spearheaded by the captain of the team Shea Weber, who is highly regarded as one of the best defenseman around the league. He has a wicked shot, which may be the hardes...

Dissecting The Predators: Part 1 of 5

After a loss to the St.Louis Blues last night in a close game where the Preds outworked and outplayed the Blues for majority of the game but lose in shootout, I figured it would be appropriate to start this series by looking at the team’s offense. While the team has suffered some critical injuries that are key to the Preds offense such as Lombardi, Legwand, Goc and Suter for extended times, their offense has still been underwhelming. Currently in the standing Nashville sits at 28th in the league in goals per game at 2.25 and their power play is 29th at a measly 9.6%. In this article I am not going to discuss the power play as that will come later in the series so for now I a...

A Preds Fan at a Leaf Game

Tonight I had gone to see my team the Nashville Predators take on the Leafs for the second time in my life. I had gotten great seats behind the leafs net was hoping not to go 0-2 in my visits to the ACC to watch the Preds play, unfortunately that would not be the case. I walked in to the ACC with my friend who was a leaf fan with both of us sporting our team’s jerseys. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was not the only Predators fan at the game as on our way to our seats we saw a couple of groups of them. With everyone one we passed I got the standard grin and wave showing as I saw the surprise look on their face as they saw another fan that wasn’t some sort of maple l...

Finally Smiling

It was a fitting end to a losing streak of 5 games for the Nashville Predators, one that started and ended with St.Louis. The dreadful streak began just before the Predators went on a 5 game road trip. They were at home against none other than the Blues and lost that game 3-0. Before that game, the Predators were atop the central division and slowly fell, being taken over by their opponents of tonight the Blues. It seems as for now the ship has been righted and a streak that began in Nashville and ended in St.Louis is a fitting end and a game that lived up to the division rivalry hype. The Predators and Blues had already met twice before and both had taken a game in the season se...

Predators hobble to heartbreak loss

The Nashville Predators continued their road trip Wednesday as they flew in to meet the Coyotes in Phoenix. Having lost their past two games to division rivals St. Louis and Detroit the Preds were expected to bounce back and get back to their winning ways of old. Before the game there was both good and bad news for the team as Marcel Goc was taken off IR and cleared to play against the Coyotes as well as TooToo and Bouillon both missed the previous game against Detroit. Unfortunately Nashville would lose another Key player as the injuries just do not seem to let up as Erat would not make the trip with Nashville, which would leave them without Lombardi, Suter and Erat all top ...
