While the amount of teams renting has gone down over the last couple of years, some teams are still shelling out a ton of assets for a few months of service. As GM's assess damage suffered by other teams in recent history due to the excessive cost of rent, the amount of gambling at the NHL trade deadline has visibly diminished. But this season, Lou Lamoriello ventured back to a place where all those before him have failed. Darren Dreger from TSN via Kevin Allen of USA Today as well as a few other media outlets are reporting that the Atlanta Thrashers have traded Ilya Kovalchuk to the New Jersey Devils. Details of the trade are still not known and the trade itself is still not confirmed. Dreger even reporting that Kovalchuk himself has not been notified of the trade. Devils/Lightning Game Suspended in Second Period after Lighting Malfunction

Certainly one of the odder occurrences in the 2009-10 season (and it's been an odd one so far folks). In the middle of the second period, with the Tampa Bay Lightning leading the New Jersey Devils 3-0, the lights went out. Nearly 2 hours later, Gary Bettman officially postponed the game. No explanation was offered to the fans in the arena for most of the period, while teams were working to fix the lights, or at least compensate for the darkness. No word on when the game will be completed, but the Devils have to travel to Montreal (where the lights are certain to work, trust me) for a game at the Bell Centre tomorrow night.
