The New York Islanders play host to the New Jersey Devils this afternoon. Islanders fans also hope that their team remembers to play hockey – something that has proved to be a difficult task in the last few games.
On Thanksgiving Eve, the Islanders dropped a heartbreaker to the Flyers in overtime, despite having gained a 3-1 lead. An unfortunate bounce off the glass led to Danny Briere’s tying goal with 5 minutes to play in the third period.
The Islanders received a power play opportunity in overtime, but were unable to convert. The Flyers quickly took advantage of the second chance they were given for the bonus point and ...
Brian Rolston was added to the Islanders roster over the summer for two reasons: to help get to the cap floor with his $5 million contract and to add an experienced veteran that could contribute offensively.
Through the first ten games of the season, Rolston was struggling to produce in the form in which both he and the Islanders had hoped. He had dressed for nine of the first 10 games of the year, (missing one as his wife was expected to give birth) and only put up two assists while playing on the third line with Josh Bailey and Blake Comeau.
Comeau is still searching for his first point of the year and Bailey picked up an assist in last night's win over the Capitals; his...
It was almost exactly a month ago when the Sharks kicked off their 2011-12 season with an opening night win against the Phoenix Coyotes at the Shark Tank. San Jose dominated that game by a score of 6-3, which doesn't really do it justice, considering just how much better the Sharks actually were. This was the first time fans and coaches alike had a chance to see just what this new, and hopefully improved, Sharks team would look like, and it looked good.
But then there were the dark times. A three game stretch where the Sharks played Anaheim, St. Louis, and Anahe...
The New York Islanders announced today that former New Jersey Devils forward Jay Pandolfo, who had been playing with the Islanders during the pre-season on a tryout, and Ryan Strome, the team's 5th overall pick in 2011, were both signed to contracts with the team before today's 5 PM deadline.
Pandolfo's contract is for one year, likely serving as a member of the team's fourth line unit and a veteran penalty killer. Whether or not he will be in the line up on opening night is unknown as Reasoner will be at center with Matt Martin, Brian Rolston and Trevor Gillies competing with Pandolfo for the names to be on the roster.
The Philadelphia Flyers won their third consecutive preseason game on Thursday night by defeating the New Jersey Devils by a score of 2-1. The game was sloppier than Monday night’s battle with the Rangers but a third period goal by Jaromir Jagr allowed the Flyers to walk away with the victory.
The New York Islanders are in the middle of training camp; plenty of fresh faces are looking to surprise the coaching staff and crack the line-up while a few other seasoned and whithered faces look to continue their NHL career with an impressive tryout.
But what everyone is hoping for is a successful season that will result in the Islanders FINALLY making the playoffs after the slow and steady rebuild began three seasons ago.
Let's take a look at some of the major events that have transpired in Islanders country during the off-season thus far:
1. General Manager Garth Snow re-signed Kyle Okposo and Michael Grabner to five-year contract extensions at an affordable pri...
Any casual sports fan would think that Montreal's hockey team is named the Canadiens because they are Canada’s team, or that they have fans all across Canada. To be honest, only the last statement is true.
Les Habitants have always spelled Canadiens with an ‘E’ , so maybe that should give some the idea that the team itself doesn’t represent all of Canada. For now, the team represents all of Quebec, whether it be English or French, Catholic or Jewish. I say for now, because even the most die hard fan of the Habs cannot wait for the return of the Quebec Nordiques.
So understanding that the Montreal Canadiens are as ...
