After a lackluster effort Thursday against the Flyers it was imperative the Rangers get back to what has brought them success recently; hard work and a team-first attitude. It wouldn't be easy as the Blue Shirts would enter Friday's contest against the rival New Jersey Devils down one of their key players, Ryan Callahan, who sat out due to soreness after taking a tumble into the end boards courtesy of a Kimmo Timonen shove in the Flyers game. New York, NY - The high-powered Philadelphia Flyers (8-4-1) were able to defeat the New York Rangers (6-5-1) by the score of 4-1 in hockey action on Thursday night. And the Flyers were powered by former Rangers Blair Betts and Nikolay Zherdev who were both able to net goals for the Flyers. Adding power-play goals were Mike Richards and Chris Pronger to extend its season-bets winning streak to five games. The good news if you are a Rangers fans is that the Blueshirts are 14-4-2 in their last 20 games in Philadelphia. The portents didn't bode well for the Rangers tonight. They were playing their 3rd game in 4 nights, they had lost 2 games in a row, they were on the road in Toronto and in addition to being without Marian Gaborik, Vinny Prospal and Chris Drury, the club had a few other players battling nagging injuries. Derek Boogaard has an infected finger, Artem Anisimov had his bell rung a few nights ago against Atlanta and Michal Rozsival has been dealing with a sore knee. Sometimes being a fan sucks. Instead of just enjoying an exciting, hard-fought game I end up angry because my team lost. That's what happened last night as the Rangers dropped a 4 - 3 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes. Sometimes I think it would be easier if I didn't care so much. The fact of the matter is the Rangers and Canes played a highly competitive, back-and-forth game that had a little of everything; bad-bounces, bunting for goals, tremendous skill, 18 year-olds making key plays and plenty of hitting. New York, NY - Eric Cole scored the go-ahead goal on a power play with 3:59 left to give the Carolina Hurricanes (5-4-0) the 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers (4-4-1) in hockey action on Friday night. Also contributing was Hurricanes first-round draft pick Jeff Skinner who had his first two-goal game. Also netting a goal was Tuomo Ruutu, while Cam Ward made 40 saves in net for Carolina. For the Rangers Ryan Callahan, Marc Stall and Brandon Dubinsky all netted goals while Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves for New York who is 1-3-1 at home. New York, NY - The New York Rangers (4-3-1) could not complete a comeback in Wednesday night hockey in a 6-4 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers (4-4-1) in hockey action at Madison Square Garden. Things started out well for New York as Ryan Callahan pounded in a wrist shot at the 0:36 mark of the first period to give the Rangers the 1-0 lead. Remeber that winning blueprint I was telling you about? Well the Rangers sure did. Just like Thursday, the Rangers came out Saturday and got two early goals agains the Boston Bruins, matched the opponents physicality, and held on for a 3 - 2 win. One word to describe the Rangers effort would be "gutsy." It definitely wasn't a pretty performance but any time the Rangers can win a game on the road against a surperior team they'll take it. It was a physical contest featuring 3 scraps (all in the 1st period), 61 hits (NYR - 28, Bos - 33), and 34 blocked shots (NYR - 16, Bos - 18). On Thursday night the Rangers put forth the type of effort they'll need more of in order to remain in contention until the return of several key players. The Blue Shirts avenged an earlier OT loss to the Maple Leafs with a solid effort in downing Toronto 2 - 1. New York showed a better commitment to team defense and blocked 30 Leaf shots. They were led by Michael Del Zotto (7), Marc Staal (6) and Dan Girardi (5). New York, NY - The New York Rangers (1-2-1) could not contain a third period scoring flurry, as the Avalanche (4-2-0) defeated the Rangers by the score of 3-1 in hockey action on Monday night. For Colorado they were able to obtain key Metropolitan area victories over New York and New Jersey. Chris Stewart scored twice for the Avalanche while Daniel Winnik added one goal to lead Colorado to the victory. Craig Anderson made 31 saves in net for Colorado. The Rangers actually tied the game early in the first period and had some momentum on their side. It was a game to forget for the Rangers and their fans Friday night as the Blue Shirts dropped their home opener to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Not only did the team get severely outplayed by the Leafs but 2 of their key forwards (Marian Gaborik and Chris Drury) were forced to leave due to injury. At the end of the evening the Rangers were lucky to even come away with a point but somehow they did. After opening with a ceremony commemorating the start of their 85th season, the Rangers struck first when a weak wrist shot by Michael Rozsival sneaked through several players and by Leafs’ goalie Jean-Sebastian Giguere.
