TCL Flyers Makes Its Preseason Picks

It's October 1 and hockey is back!

With the 2013-14 NHL season kicking off tonight with three games - the highlight being Washington at Chicago on NBCSN at 8 p.m. Eastern - it's that time of year where a bunch of writers, bloggers and fans pretend like they know it all and will make their picks.

And guess what! TCL Flyers is filled with a bunch of know-it-all's too!

Replacing Mark Streit's Offense Will Not Be Easy For The Isles

Mark Streit was a very serviceable captain of this New York Islanders squad for the past two years, but his defensive prowess was fading just like his time spent with the team. His -27 and -14 rating over the past two respective seasons might not be missed on the Isles blue line, but his ability to power play the quarterback has certainly left a void (Photo Credit: Dan4th/Flickr).

Of his 27 points last season, 11 of them were scored with the man advantage. The previous season, Streit scored 47 points as the Isles top defenseman with 23 of them coming on the power play.

Isles Fall To Devils In Brooklyn

The New York Islanders made history last night, playing the New Jersey Devils in the first ever NHL game in Brooklyn. Granted, it was only a preseason game, but the sporting event brought in many fans since this is the future home of the New York Islanders.

Unfortunately, the final result isn't exactly what everyone would have liked to see, a 3-0 loss to one of their top rivals in the Metropolitan Division. But as stated above, this was only a preseason game with rosters lacking regular skaters for two teams that are looking to shake off some rust and evaluate line combinations and prospects.

The Barclays Center Experience

It was not your typical preseason NHL game between two longtime rivals the New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils on a mid September Saturday night. This was a different kind of game and in some ways a regular season feel to it prior to faceoff as this night officially embarked a new era of New York Islanders hockey.

Where Are They Now? Ed Westfall

Today we look back at an individual who had some firsts in Islanders franchise history and someone who has been around the organization for a very long time.

John Tavares Set For Breakout Year

Saying that John Tavares will have a breakout season when he recently became a Hart Trophy finalist and has scored 249 points in 291 played NHL games in just four seasons might sound a bit ridiculous. But it very well may be true (Photo credit: theseoduke/Flickr).

Tavares was just one point shy in each of the past two seasons from establishing himself as an official point-per-game player (47 in 48 games in 2013, 81 in 82 games in 2012). He also has only eclipsed the 30 goal mark once, scoring 31 in 2012 with a whopping 50 assists to go along with his scoring touch.

With all of that being said, it is very possible that John Tavares still has not reached his full potential.

Where Are They Now? John Tonelli

This week we look back at a key member of the Islanders team who won 4 straight Stanley Cups in the 1980’s and that is John Tonelli.

Where Are They Now? Shawn Bates

This week we look back at another member of the 2001-2002 Islanders #17 Shawn Bates. Fans will remember Bates for one memorable goal in the 2002 playoffs against Toronto in Game 4 at Nassau Coliseum.

Are The New York Islanders Still A Playoff Team?

There are a lot of questions surrounding the New York Islanders as they head into next season. The biggest one will be whether or not they are capable of making the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The NHL Facebook page recently asked this same question, and many fans were either skeptical, positive or found the idea downright absurd (and these weren't just Rangers fans).

Despite an intense, hard fought playoff series with a very inexperienced roster against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team that has been one of the most dominant forces of the league for the past few years, many critics are still not convinced that the New York Islanders are a guaranteed playoff team.

And they shouldn't be.

I am proud to reinstall the Where Are They Now section to The Checking Line. Every Thursday from now until the NHL season begins I will give Islanders fans an in depth look at what some of their favorite former Islanders are up to now.
