Atlantic Division Preview

New Jersey- The Devils made some great moves in the offseason to already improve a team that finished 2nd in the Eastern Conference last season. The Devils added Anton Volchenkov and former Sabre Henrik Tallinder. Along with those two big defenseman, the Devils also acquired Johan Hedberg, who will backup Martin Brodeur, and Jason Arnott, who is now in his second stint with the club. The Devils remain a dangerous team with Brodeur in net, even though he is past his prime. Brodeur is still one of the best in the league at 38 years old. Zach Parise is the new star in New Jersey as he put up 82 points last season. The Devils have good veteran experience with players like Patrik Elias, Brian ...

Southeast Division Preview

With training camp right around the bend in another month, I decided to do a division by divisionpreview and what to expect from each team this season. Here is the Southeast Division outlook: Washington: Look for the Capitals to dominate the weak Southeast division again this year. Alexander Ovechkin and the high powered offense of the Caps is still there and will continue to own the South East, and perhaps the Conference. Washington didn’t make many off season moves as they remained relatively quiet after being knocked out in the first round by the Montreal Canadiens. The defense for the Capitals is sub-par and the Goaltending is less than average which may cost them again this seas...

Hockey Totems Revealed

To make a long story short, for those who have not seen the summer blockbuster Inception (which I highly recommend you do), a totem is an object that separates reality from dream. The totem distinguishes reality from dream because it takes on different characteristics in a dream state. Therefore, if the owner of the totem knows their totem well enough, they should be able to distinguish dream from reality just by looking at it or holding it. We've seen the different totems used by the characters in the movie, but how about some of the never before seen totems in the hockey world? Not everyone is strong enough to distinguish between dream and reality though. For example, Brian Burke ...

2009-10 NHL Season Video Recap

Recap the 2009-2010 NHL season set to Saosin's Finding Home.

Can the NHL find a way to make ticket sales a win-win situation for both the league and fans?

It's summer, which for hockey fans means a lot of things: the draft, prospect camps, and the anxiety of hearing about trades and re-signings for one's favorite teams. Beyond the nuts-n-bolts of team organizational points, however, is the other main issue that fans deal with over the summer break: season ticket renewal. The Blackhawks were not the only team to announce price increases over past years' rates. In perhaps one of the most interesting announcements, the Florida Panthers announced new tiered seat pricing, similar to what you see with most airlines these days.  The earlier you buy your tickets, the better the price. Most games will start at "bronze" level pricing. If a...

2009-10 NHL Season Recap

As you sit there in your favorite team jersey waiting for it to be October, let's recap and vote on our favorite moments on the season that was. The 2009-10 NHL season was one of the most thrilling ever, featuring a Stanley Cup playoff race that was wide open. The 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs smashed many ratings records on the way to crowning the Chicago Blackhawks as Stanley Cup champions. Most, if not all, of the twitter tending topics that night were NHL related. Hockey is definitely on an upswing. Some of the points below I didn't go into as much detail as I would like to have. However, I already wrote about most of it in previous columns, so sometimes it's hard to re-write. There's a l...

Is Kovalchuk Worth The Price?

As we sit here waiting for the Kovalchuk sweepstakes to end, the rumors continue to circulate the NHL. Once he is signed, the dominoes are expected to begin falling. Teams will be trading and signing free agents again, filling up the roster with any unused cap space. For now, General Managers are sitting still, waiting for someone to sign the Russian forward. How much is Kovalchuk actually worth? Signing a long term contract is a huge risk for any team. The Islanders singed Rick DiPietro to a 15 year contract, but we have yet to see that pay off at all. DiPietro has started 12 games in the past two years, but still has plenty of time to live up to his contract. Being the first overa...
