Flyers Get Defensive As They Face The Jets

Tonight the Philadelphia Flyers (32-19-7) will leave all their baggage behind as they kick off a four game road trip tonight in Winnipeg when they take on the Jets (29-26-6).

This road trip could not have come at a better time as the team welcomes two new defensive additions.

Grossman doesn't turn heads but plays well in debut

He was brought here to play well in the defensive zone.

With one game in the book, the one minor victory the Flyers can take away from Saturday’s disgusting 6-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, is that newly acquired defensive defenseman, Nicklas Grossman lived up to his reputation.

Well, for one game at least.

Grossman trade leaves room for future moves

It was the first step in the right direction.

Much of the talk since the start of December has revolved around the Flyers needing to add a defenseman to improve their standing as a contender in the Eastern Conference.

While Grossman is a great addition considering the price (two draft picks), he isn’t a game changer. This move was to shore up the defense, not solidify it.

With the deadline just ten days away, the Flyers still have plenty of time to continue to tweak their roster.

Deadline Reality Check: Defensemen

Like every other fan, I'll throw out a crazy trade possibility or nine this time of year. As hockey fans, it's typical to lose rationality in the month leading up to deadline day, an unofficial holiday in my book. 

As Red Wings fans, this tendency is even stronger due to past deadline deals that brought Hall of Famers such as Chelios to Hockeytown. The salary cap era has stifled Ken Holland's freewheeling deals but with the Wings sitting atop the standings with over $5 million in cap space, many think a big splash is coming.
