Examining The Acquisitions

When a team finds success in the NHL on a consistent basis, it is very difficult for GM’s to tinker with said success in order to find greater success. It is the easiest explanation as to how the NHL has witnessed such playoff parity. In the modern cap era it has become even more difficult to place a team on the ice that has a continued shot at a championship. So with all of this in perspective, is it possible that we see a Stanley Cup champion this season that has also won the cup within the past five seasons?

It is the question that seemingly everyone in the NHL is waiting to see. With Pittsburgh and Chicago pushing the boundaries of greatness, the NHL might finally witness ...

We Got'em

Well, the Pittsburgh Penguins have officially acquired Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames. In exchange for the veteran’s experience the Penguins have traded their first round selection in the 2013 entry level draft and unsigned college prospects Ben Hanowski and Kenny Agostino.

Amid rumors and credited reporting, Jarome Iginla had initially been on his way to Boston. After a tough loss to the Canadiens, Boston fans were rejoicing in emphatic jubilance to have such a revered player help fix whatever ail their team. Twitter erupted with numerous reports on how the trade was won and how Boston has pulled into a virtual (paper champion) tie with the Pittsburgh Penguins after th...

NY Islanders Lose To Pittsburgh Penguins, in Another Frustrating Home Game

Penguins Roster Finalized

The 23 man roster has been set as the Penguins head into the 2013 season. The interesting aspect of the current roster was Coach Dan Bylsma’s selection of eight defensemen.

With the roster of defensemen set at eight, the Penguins had to place Brian Straight on waivers.  It is surfacing now that Strait was claimed off of waivers by the New York Islanders.  While a good pick up for the Isles, it is a difficult loss of depth for the Penguins.

It is expected that both Robert Bortuzzo and Ben Lovejoy will be the 7th and 8th defensemen in the rotation, giving highly touted prospect Simon Despres a spot among the Penguins top 4 pairing.  It is expect as well that...

Malkin-g A Big Impression

The NHL.com-esk headline is only deserving for the Pens as their highlights dominated the webpage this weekend.  After a few back and forth games that featured tw big divisional wins and pathetic loss, the Pens put together two dominant home performances.

In two games this weekend the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to put up 12 goals and allowed just three.  Evgeni Malkin, the league’s leading point scorer, had 4 goals and an assist in the two games, giving him 78 points on the season.  The stats, while impressive, do not tell the entire story.

Heading into Saturday’s matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Steven Stamkos and Malk...

Winning is as Simple as Depth

In many ways the Pittsburgh Penguins can be considered a star studded cast.  Teams such as Chicago, Philly, Washington, and Detroit boast a lineup of great talent.  These teams are winners for one reason though, depth.  Depth is what wins championships, depth is what every team needs, and this season the Pens so called depth players are rising into stardom.

For many years they have been lucky to have a third line center that was offensively respected and defensively feared in Jordan Staal.  His play over the years has earned him a selke nomination, league wide respect for one of the best penalty killers, and mostly a Stanley Cup, but now ...

What Concussion? Sidney Crosby Dazzles In NHL Return

59 seconds of icetime was all it took before the hockey world knew that “Sid the Kid” was not merely healthy – he was officially back.

Taking a pass from Pascal Dupuis at centre ice at the start of his second shift, Pittsburgh Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby flew into the offensive zone like a man possessed once the puck arrived on his blade. After blowing the doors off of helpless defenceman Andrew MacDonald, he fired a backhander with a level of speed and accuracy that outweighed many players’ best shots on their forehand, making no mistake in rifling the puck into the upper portion of rookie Anders Nilsson’s net.

Crosby Watch Ends: Islanders in Pittsburgh

When the puck drops for Monday night’s matchup, the New York Islanders will officially become a part of the biggest milestone in Sidney Crosby’s comeback.

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Sunday evening that Crosby will be playing in his first game since suffering a concussion on January 5th, which was the second of that week for him. This comes after months of speculation and rumors ranging from being ready on opening night to contemplating retirement.

The Islanders have really fallen on hard times as of late, and it seems to have come to a head after their embarrassing home effort on Saturday night, where they dropped a 6-0 decision to the Boston Bruins. If t...
