Two of the league’s premiere teams faced off in a Sunday matinee when the Pittsburgh Penguins rolled into town to take on the Chicago Blackhawks. Two clubs typically known for their offensive firepower, the game was defensive and chippy, with several non-calls as the refs let the players go at it. The fans at the United Center got to see 65 minutes of hockey along with a dazzling shootout, and in the end watched their hometown Hawks win a 2-1 victory against the Penguins.
The Blackhawks needed to start off solidly against the MN Wild after their annual Vegas trip. They certainly didn't expect to find themselves in an 0-2 hole after just 10 minutes of play -- or to suffer their second consecutive shutout loss, the first time that has happened since 2006.
Mikko Koivu opened the scoring unassisted at 7:40 in the first period. Jason Zucker would make it 2-0 at the 10-minute mark, and Mikael Granlund would put the final nail in the coffin late in the second.
However, one goal was all they needed, as the Wild held the Blackhawks to just 24 SOG. Compare that to the Wild, who had 24 SOG in the second period alone. Usually, it's the ot...
The Avalanche had a "goalie win" versus the Blackhawks earlier this week; last night, Chicago did the same versus the Wild.
There's been few games this season where the Blackhawks have been held under 25 SOG; last night, they had just 20 - but 4 of them were goals, including one empty-netter.
Chicago broke the streak they were on by scoring first, for the first time in seven games, a Patrick Sharp goal 5:08 into the opening period. Patrick Kane would stretch the lead to 2-0 by the end of the period with a power play goal on Thomas Vanek's 5-minute penalty.
Jason Zucker put the Wild on the board just 1:03 into the second.
The NHL rang in the new year with another spectacular display between two of the league’s more popular teams in America’s capital. The Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals played a tight and exciting game in the seventh annual Winter Classic. In the end, it was the home team that triumphed in a game that went all the way down to the wire.
The home team took an early 2-0 lead with a couple of early goals. Just seven minutes into...
As the Blackhawks played their final game of 2014 - and their last game before the Winter Classic - it was a roller coaster game against the Nashville Predators.
First came the deep plunge of going down 3-0 in the first half of the game. Roman Josi opened up Nashville's scoring on an even-handed goal at 11:50. Craig Smith would stretch out the lead to 2-0 at 17:12. Finally, ten minutes of play later, James Neal would score his first of the night to make it 3-0.
But the Blackhawks weren't about to lay down and take it. Brad Richards scored a few minutes later to get the Blackhawks on the board, 3-1. Andrew Shaw would have his first goal in several games to mak...
As has become tradition in the last few years on his birthday, Patrick Sharp scored a goal and the Hawks picked up a win, defeating the Avalanche 5-2 in Denver on Saturday night. Corey Crawford found redemption after getting pulled in his last start, stopping 23 shots while opposing netminder Calvin Pickard cooled off after being red-hot in his last three games.
Brent Seabrook earned first star of the game honors, picking up a goal in the win and taking away a golden...
After a disappointing shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on the road, the Hawks came back to the United Center and shut out the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-0 on Sunday night. Antti Raanta stopped 31 shots to earn his second shutout of the year.
The victory was especially meaningful for Chicago tonight after news broke this morning of the passing of assistant equipment manager Clint Reif. Reif, 34, had been with the Blackhawks for nine years and was close to many on...
The Blackhawks kicked off the weekend with an away game at Columbus, which they lost 3-2 after a nine-round shootout. It was Corey Crawford's first start after missing a couple weeks with a sprained ankle.
Jack Skille opened the evening's scoring with an even-handed goal late in the first to give CBJ the 1-0 lead. Ten minutes of play later, Patrick Sharp would tie things up for Chicago 1-1.
Kevin Connauton would give the Blue Jackets the lead once more 1:55 into the third, and then Ben Smith tied it 2-2 after a goal that had to go to Toronto review. Marcus Kruger had slid into Sergei Bobrovsky in the goal, but Ben Smith was able to stretch and tap the loose p...
The Hawks came in looking to rebound off of their loss in New York vs the Islander and bounce back they did. Most importantly they worked hard to beat a very hard working team and can take pride in their efforts and skate away with a solid team win.
Coming in the Hawks had to play within less than 24 hrs to a rested Calgary Flames team but somehow the Hawks were able to muster up the energy to put together a win.
The game also so Tim Erixon make his debut in a Blackhawks jersey and played on the third defensive pairing with Rozsival. Erixon had a solid game for his first and looked pretty comfortable on the backend. Welcome to Chicago and good luck with the Hawks.
The Hawks continue their three-game swing through the Eastern conference as they face off against the Boston Bruins tonight in TD Gardens. Once one of hockey’s most fearsome teams, the Bruins are still a formidable opponent, but injuries and sickness has taken a toll on the team, and Boston sits fifth in the Atlantic division, clinging to the final wild card playoff spot.
The Bruins are in desperate need for a win against the NHL’s hottest team. After com...
