Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes @ Philadelphia Flyers

The Coyotes held on after scoring two quick goals in the first period and seeing two quick ones scored on them to edge the Leafs in a shootout on Tuesday, 3-2.

They have now entered into Bryzpalooza.

With all the focus surrounding the former Coyotes' goaltender that famously left the desert in favour of signing a deal that would bring him 10 million dollars this season, their current man between the pipes continues to pick up wins.  Mike Smith improved his record to 7-0-2 in his last nine starts and now faces the highest-scoring team in the league.

The Flyers are two points behind the Penguins for the lead in that division as well as the entire Ea...

Bryzgalov: Fond Memories of Phoenix

Ilya Bryzgalov will be facing his former team for the first time on Thursday night. Matt Brigidi explains why it won't be just another game for Bryz.

Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes @ Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to regain the momentum they had at the beginning of the season when they led the Eastern Conference and the NHL in wins and points.  They have since gone 5-5-0 in their last ten and will face a red-hot Coyotes team who have won five of their last seven, and last season beat them 5-1 in their only meeting of the season.

Toronto is still tied for 2nd place in the NHL in terms of wins, and continue to score almost three goals per game. They've also won two-thirds of the games in which they have trailed first. For their part, Phoenix has outscored their opponents 21-14 on the road and have not been beaten by the Leafs since October of 20...

Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes @ San Jose Sharks

The Coyotes have packed their bags and set off en route to San Jose, as tonight marks the start of a five-game road trip.  They dropped their last contest against the Canadiens in overtime Thursday night, as a Josh Gorges slapshot found its way behind goaltender Mike Smith at the 1:45 mark of the extra frame.  The Sharks, who took the last game against their division rival Coyotes by a score of 6-3, are 8-1-1 in their last ten games and sport the best shots-per-game ratio of the NHL with an average of 36.

San Jose is also stellar on the power play at home (30%, a league-best rating).  That fateful home opener on October 8th saw the Sharks capitalize three tim...

Joe Pavelski: The Greatest Hockey Player of All Time?

p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }

The Sharks traded for Brent Burns and Martin Havlat in the offseason. So what? The real story of this young season has been the incredible play of Joe Pavelski. Playing last year largely as the third line center, Pavelski tallied a career high 66 points. It was that sort of play that made Devin Setoguchi expendable in the offseason, allowing GM Doug Wilson to acquire the top 4 defenseman this team truly needed.

This year, Pavelski has taken Setoguchi's spot as the right winger on the top line with Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau (who has rece...

Montreal Canadiens 3 Phoenix Coyotes 2 (OT)The Habs Get A Needed Win On The Road

When the season schedule is released some games jump out at you.  There are some games that excite you.  There are some games that you plan for.  And then there was last night’s game.  A game in Phonenix on a Thursday night in the middle of November which comprises one of the 82 the Habs will play.   Playing the Coyotes in Phoenix has become the least exciting part of any teams’ season.

So, all you can hope for is an easy win and to get out of Arizona without any injuries.  Last night’s win wasn’t easy.  It wasn’t pr...

Game Day: Montreal Canadiens @ Phoenix Coyotes

The Montreal Canadiens are coming off of a 3-1 loss against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, and head into Jobing.com Arena as the first team the Coyotes have faced since they beat those same Oilers 4-2 on Saturday night.  Phoenix, however, are winless against Montreal through the last 11 games between the two.  Tonight's matchup also happens to be the 2500th against the Canadiens since the beginning of the Jets'/Coyotes' franchise.

The Canadiens are 4-5-1 in their last stretch of ten games, including four wins in a row, whereas Phoenix has hopped up to 8th spot in the Western Conference after going 6-3-1 in their last ten.  This is the last time Phoenix...

Montoya Minutes: Al Needs To Play

Al Montoya was the surprise starter for the Islanders home opening loss to the Florida Panthers back on October 8th when both Rick DiPietro and Evgeni Nabokov were healthy and capable of starting the game. DiPietro, who had been battling injuries for what had seemed like forever, probably expected to dress for the season opener preparing to embark on another attempt to return to glory. But that wasn't the case.

Head coach Jack Capuano chose to go with El Cubano, a goaltender that the Islanders acquired in a trade with the Phoenix Coyotes after injuries seem to strike every single net-minder in the 2011 season. Montoya seemingly won the starting position between himself and Kevin...

In The Rear View: The Sharks' First Month in Review

  p

It was almost exactly a month ago when the Sharks kicked off their 2011-12 season with an opening night win against the Phoenix Coyotes at the Shark Tank. San Jose dominated that game by a score of 6-3, which doesn't really do it justice, considering just how much better the Sharks actually were. This was the first time fans and coaches alike had a chance to see just what this new, and hopefully improved, Sharks team would look like, and it looked good.

But then there were the dark times. A three game stretch where the Sharks played Anaheim, St. Louis, and Anahe...

Game Day: Edmonton Oilers @ Phoenix Coyotes

The Edmonton Oilers, winners of six in a row, are off to their best start in a quarter-decade. They'll be the visitors tonight at Jobing.com Arena as they face off against the Phoenix Coyotes, who after a five-game unbeaten streak fell victim to Pekka Rinne's 23rd shutout on Thursday.

The Coyotes, who were 3-1 against the Oilers last season, sent Andy Miele back to the AHL's Portland Pirates yesterday, as Cal O'Reilly is expected to start tonight.  Mike Smith will likely be the starting goaltender, and Martin Hanzal's status is still questionable. Out for the Oilers are Cam Barker, Ales Hemsky, Ryan Whitney and Darcy Hordichuk.
