Montoya Holds Firm In Isles' Road Win

In yet another of a seemingly endless string of low scoring affairs, the Islanders went to Buffalo on Tuesday night and shuffled out of town with a win.

The Islanders, who hadn't won consecutive road affairs since March, were bouyed by the fine (and sometimes downright spectacular) play of Al Montoya.

Montoya, who improved his season's numbers to a 2.07 Goals Against Average and .933 save percentage, has clearly established himself as the best goalie employed on Long Island. For head coach Jack Capuano to even consider starting Rick DiPietro ahead of him at this point is laughable.

It took a power play after a hi-sticking call against Buffalo (you're going to...

Isles Face Sabres: It's Not Miller Time

Preview:  With 5.4 seconds left in the third period of Saturday’s contest against the Devils, Islanders fans rejoiced seeing Frans Neilsen win a defensive zone faceoff with a 1 goal lead.

With 2.1 seconds left, they gasped with horror as the puck somehow squeaked by Al Montoya with Islander-killer Zach Parise on the doorstep.

For about 2 minutes, the Islanders and their fans wondered “how the hell did we let this happen again?  What do we have to do to close a game out around here?”

Then, when all hope was lost, an act of mercy prevailed.  From the heavens on high (also known as the NHL offices in Toronto), the referees decreed the messag...

Islanders Skate To First Road Win!

The Prudential Center was as loud as it had been the entire night. The New Jersey Devils just tied the game at 3 with 2 seconds remaining in regulation.

Or did they?

After a league review in Toronto, it was determined that Zach Parise’s skate directed the puck into the net and the goal was overturned.

Islanders get Second Crack at Devils

The New York Islanders (5-11-4) are hoping for a different effort on Saturday afternoon, in the second half of a home-and-home series with the New Jersey Devils (12-8-1).

On Friday afternoon, the Islanders were shutout by the Devils at the Nassau Coliseum, 1-0. It was the 6th time the Islanders have been shutout this season, the 5th time on home ice.

Jack Capuano spoke a lot after the game about "getting more shots and bodies to the net." The Islanders had some moments where they did that, but their passing still looked out of synch.

Al Montoya returned from his stint on the IR and was one of the few bright spots for the Islanders. Montoya made 22 saves, includ...

Still Without Power On The Island; Isles Lose 1-0 To Devils

The New York Islanders went into today's game against the New Jersey Devils hoping to make-up for their overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers but came up short, losing 1-0 to another division rival.

It was the sixth time this season that the Islanders have been shutout, a glaring reason why this team has struggled to win hockey games.

"Obviously we didn't score. If you don't score you're not going to win a hockey game," said Islanders captain Mark Streit to me after the game. "We had chances, faced a pretty good goalie, had chances on the PP, we just didn't score but I still think there's a lot of good things we did.I thought tha...

Isles Dance With Devils

The New York Islanders play host to the New Jersey Devils this afternoon.  Islanders fans also hope that their team remembers to play hockey – something that has proved to be a difficult task in the last few games.

On Thanksgiving Eve, the Islanders dropped a heartbreaker to the Flyers in overtime, despite having gained a 3-1 lead.  An unfortunate bounce off the glass led to Danny Briere’s tying goal with 5 minutes to play in the third period.

The Islanders received a power play opportunity in overtime, but were unable to convert.  The Flyers quickly took advantage of the second chance they were given for the bonus point and ...

Point Taken, Point Given Away - Islanders/ Flyers Post Game

The Philadelphia Flyers love playing against the New York Islanders.

For the 22nd time in 23 meetings the Flyers came away with two points, erasing a 3-1 deficit, and defeated the Islanders 4-3 in overtime.

Danny Briere scored his second goal of the game with 2:26 remaining in overtime, seconds after the Flyers killed a rare overtime penalty.

Can the Third Jerseys Break Up The Isles Losing Funk? Gameday vs. Philadelphia

The Islanders will don their brand new black third jerseys tonight as they look to rebound after their second straight shutout loss. Tonight, the Isles will take on the Philadelphia Flyers at the Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders head into this game 5-10-3 and the Flyers are 11-6-3.

With the recent loss of Mark Eaton on the Isles blue line, the Islanders called up Micheal Haley from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Not only will Haley provide toughness into the Isles lineup, but he can create a few scoring chances here and there.

Coach Jack Capuano has yet to announce tonight's starting goaltender, but it could be either Rick DiPietro or Anders Nilsson, who made his NHL starting ...

Where Have The Isles Gone?

Before I begin to talk about the current state of the New York Islanders, I have to ask where this team that is portrayed in this YouTube clip (courtesy of user bufmemaud) has gone?

"We saw it last year, I saw it. I saw the energy and the desperation in our game last year. The second half, we had the best record in the National Hockey League after the All-Star break. We were physical. We were tough to play against."

-Islanders head coach Jack Capuano after the New York Islanders 6-0 loss Saturday night to the Boston Bruins.

Ask the Boston Bruins and Sidney Crosby and the rest of the Pittsburgh...

Crosby Watch Ends: Islanders in Pittsburgh

When the puck drops for Monday night’s matchup, the New York Islanders will officially become a part of the biggest milestone in Sidney Crosby’s comeback.

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Sunday evening that Crosby will be playing in his first game since suffering a concussion on January 5th, which was the second of that week for him. This comes after months of speculation and rumors ranging from being ready on opening night to contemplating retirement.

The Islanders have really fallen on hard times as of late, and it seems to have come to a head after their embarrassing home effort on Saturday night, where they dropped a 6-0 decision to the Boston Bruins. If t...
