Free Agency 2012: Philadelphia Flyers Make Offers to UFAs Zach Parise, Ryan Suter, and Matt Carle

According to a report by the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi, the Philadelphia Flyers have made offers to unrestricted free agents Zach Parise, Ryan Suter, and Matt Carle. ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun confirmed Carchidi’s report.

All three UFAs have been rumoured to be targeted by the Flyers, especially defensemen Suter and Carle.

Parise, one of the elite forwards in the league, is one of the top sought-after free agents this summer. After playing in just 13 games in the 2010-2011 season due to injury, he posted 69 points in 82 games during the 2011-2012 regular season, and another 15 points in 24 games during the playoffs.

Free Agency: The Carolina Hurricanes Need Help On Defense

If you follow the Carolina Hurricanes, you know that they need more help on defense than just about any other team in the Southeast division. In fact they have been amongst the worst teams in the NHL at preventing shots on goal, not to mention that they are atrocious at the penalty kill.

Rebuilding a team's defense is always a long-term process and with quite a few young players working their way through the system, the Canes' defense corps is a work in progress.

Carolina's management has a few pieces in house that they can turn to but they must get it done in free agency if they are going to complete this roster and get it shaped up by the start of the NHL se...

Rounding Out The Isles Defense

The Islanders are just a day away from joining 29 other NHL clubs in the festivities of July 1st. To a lot of people, it is just another summer day to be enjoyed outside. For many others, it's a day meant for excitement or anguish which steals one's complete attention for TSN, Twitter and any other fast paced media outlet that will have updates on the opening of NHL Free Agency.

The Isles appear set to be parting ways with Mark Eaton, Steve Staios, Milan Jurcina and perhaps their most important free agent, PA Parenteau. The latter has served as an important member on the team's top line for the past two seasons and is coming off his biggest year, likely to command a long term contract and a significant pay raise on the open market.

The previously mentioned defenseman will not receive any grief for signing elsewhere. In fact, many Islanders fans will probably be overjoyed that they will have the opportunity to see aging veterans replaced by young, upcoming talent from within the organization.

Target Acquired: Bobby Ryan

Bob McKenzie of TSN has reported via Twitter that "Bobby Ryan is 'available' again." Acquiring Ryan would immediately strengthen Detroit's offensive core and bring the size necessary to compete in the contemporary NHL.

Suter's List of "Potential" Teams Does Not Exist, According to Report

Despite earlier reports that pending-unrestricted free agent Ryan Suter (NSH) has no interest in signing with an Eastern Conference team, his agent has denied that claim.

Yesterday, Comcast SportsNet’s Tim Panaccio reported that Suter had a list of teams that he would potentially be willing to talk to if his rights were dealt before July 1st. According to Panaccio’s source, there were only Western Conference teams on Suter’s list.

But in an article released by the Star Tribune’s Michael Russo, he reports that Suter’s agent, Neil Sheehy, denies that a list even exists.

Is Puck Possession Dead?

As hockey fans gear up for the Western and Eastern Conference Finals, a few common themes among the remaining teams resonates: trap style play, tight checking, and a reliance on elite goaltending. Every year after the Stanley Cup is lifted, the champs are analyzed as to why they won, and other teams then spend time scouting youngsters and spend cap space on UFAs that resemble the Cup winning roster. The NHL is definitely a copy cat league. For the past five years, teams have been trying to mimic the style of play of the Red Wings, Penguins, and Blackhawks. After all, why wouldn't want you to copy what wins? But take a look at the puck possession-like teams that are eliminated: Detroit, Chicago, San Jose, Vancouver, Pittsburgh. Both Conference Finals will send shock waves through the NHL, and the Red Wings better be paying attention.

After Mike Babcock's puck possession team lost to the Oilers in '06, their style of play didn't change at the root, however; they were told me be more physical and work harder in the dirty areas. That paid off the next three years by making to the Conference Finals in '07, Winning it all in '08, and coming within 1 goal at a chance to win it all again in '09. Now, it sure seems Red Wing hockey needs to be re-evaluated. Ken Holland and Mike Babcock should be watching every game of the playoffs from here on out. The Western Finals have been settled, and it will feature the Phoenix Coyotes and the LA Kings. These two teams skate hard, trap, are defensively responsible, and heavily rely on their goaltenders to steal games. (By the way, is it not a coincidence that the year Phoenix lets Bryzgalov go they make it this far? He's never been a proven playoff goalie, and probably never will be.) The same goes in the East; The Devils (who are the definition of the trap) are waiting to face either the New York Rangers or the Washington Capitals. The Rangers have consistently been a defensively disciplined team with a couple of decent scoring lines, but overall block tons of shots and make things easy for their world class goalie Henrik Lundquist. The Capitals on the other hand, were born a puck possession team when they inherited forwards Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Semin. Since Dale Hunter took over as head coach, he has somehow got them to play a style of hockey whereby no all-stars are praised, but an entire team can reap rewards from teamwork. Players like Jay Beagle, Matt Hendricks, and Joel Ward are laying their bodies on the line for their coach, and Ovechkin is learning a valuable lesson.

TCL Round 2 Staff Predictions: Phoenix Coyotes vs. Nashville Predators

2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Western Conference SemifinalsPhoenix Coyotes ( 3 ) vs. Nashville Predators ( 4 )  If the first round opponents of these two teams would be facing each other instead of the Preds and Coyotes, we'd be talking about two of the biggest rivals in NHL history, and two recent Stanley Cup winners. But we're not talking about them. We're talking about two underdog teams that got to the second round by beating perennial favorites, with great goaltending, great coaching, and a lot of hard work. It's surprising that the Phoenix Coyotes are even still in the league, yet alone in the second round of these playoffs, after taking out the Chi...

Islanders Have Tough Off-Season Decisions to Make

With the New York Islanders heading into another off-season without a playoff berth, the team will look to solidify its young core through the NHL draft, trades, and signings of free agents. (Robert Kowal/Flickr)

While the Isles might not be fortunate enough to land Nail Yakupov in this year's NHL Entry Draft, the team should focus on trying to scout the best defenseman out of this year's draft. Names like Trouba, Dumba, Rielly, Murray, and Reinhart are headlining the list of premier d-men that will be available to the Islanders come draft day in June.
Drafting a young defenseman will probably be the right choice for the Isles, but one can't simply ignore that New York has holes to fill for the 2012-2013 NHL Season. Mike Mottau, Milan Jurcina, Mark Eaton, and Steve Staios tried to do their jobs as veteran rearguards, but it was painfully obvious on certain nights that the Islanders' d-men were simply outmatched. If the Islanders want to stay in contention in a highly competitive Atlantic Division, then General Manager Garth Snow must exhaust all of his resources toward signing or acquiring a top 4 defenseman.

Trade Deadline Creates Frenzy in Philadelphia

The trade winds are blowing all over the NHL and its pipelines. Twitter is ablaze with rumors, Facebook is full of propositions, and everyone is on pins and needles.

It’s what makes the NHL trade deadline among the most frantic and fun days of the sports year. Every team has problems and every follower of the team knows exactly what the cure will be for their woes.

When the trade finally goes down, many will ooh and aah over the new shiny toy in the home sweater.

In Philadelphia, it’s a little bit different.

The beast that is the media climate of the City of Brotherly Love seems to remain at a fever pitch. If it’s not about what right-handed bat the Phillies should acquire, it’s about what the Eagles should do with their disgruntled wide receiver.

It goes on and on and it never stops.

Trade Deadline: Even A Defenseman Can't Save These Flyers

The Flyers are considered to be buyers in the coming weeks as the trade deadline rolls near.

Players like Nashville’s Ryan Suter and Shea Weber as well as Toronto’s Luke Schenn have been mentioned in numerous possible trade situations and rumors. But in the end, will it all matter for the Flyers?

Before this turns into a column writing off the Flyers, take a step back and look at the situation the team is in. They are currently eight points behind the Rangers for the Atlantic Division lead while resting with the fourth seed.

But on the other side of the Flyers, they are only eight points ahead of the ninth place Capitals. The Flyers could very easily be in the bottom half of the playoff tree when April rolls around and their possible match ups could spell doom.
