Couturier, Read and Simmonds Belong Together

Imagine what would happen if Couturier had a chance to center Simmonds and Read on the third line.

In the last five games, the Flyers have scored a total of 13 goals. In that span, Couturier, Read and Simmonds have scored seven, which makes up over half of the production. In total, the group has a combined 15 points in their last five games.

There is much discussion about how Couturier deserves more minutes. A move to the third line would allow for that. Not to mention that he and Read are starting to develop a chemistry of their own when paired on the penalty kill.

Coming into Thursday night’s game against the Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky boasted a career record of 7-0-0 against New York’s other team.

For anyone who didn’t have a chance to watch the game, the 4-1 final score insinuates that Bobrovsky’s play was less than stellar.

However, nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, it was Bobrovsky’s play that kept the game as ‘close’ as it was.

The phrase is now clichéd at this point, but it originated from Irish playwright, George Bernard Shaw.

The saying is a commentary on how young people have all the opportunities in the world, yet lack the maturity and wisdom to properly take advantage of them.

For Philadelphia Flyers rookie forward Sean Couturier, the saying carries little weight.

Flyers Back Home To Face The Wild

The Philadelphia Flyers (26-13-4) have played 15 of their last 21 games in enemy territory and have returned home 2-2 from their most recent trip, which ended with a 4-2 loss in Nashville.

The good news for the Flyers is they will be home for three of their next five games leading up to the All-Star break.

In fact, the Flyers will be playing the majority of their remaining 39 games at home (23) this season.

Tonight the Flyers will host a Minnesota Wild (22-16-7) team who started the year red hot, 11-4 in November, but have since cooled.

The next few days are going to be full of debate.

Following the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 loss to the Nashville Predators, more fuel was added to the goaltender fire as Ilya Bryzgalov returned as the starting goalie.

Following two strong efforts by Sergei Bobrovsky, Bryzgalov was given an opportunity to display his talents.

Instead, more questions arose about his weaknesses.

It’s no longer a surprise when a rookie has a big game for the Philadelphia Flyers.

With the season already at the halfway mark, the Flyers rookies have played a prominent role in the team’s success.

Prior to the start of the year, the team went through one of the most aggressive makeovers in team history, which made way for younger players to step up. That makeover included the trading of their captain Mike Richards and leading scorer Jeff Carter in exchange for role players, prospects and draft picks.

Part of the compensation in the Carter deal was the eighth overall selection in this past year’s entry draft, which ultimately became Sean Couturier.

Ok, I'm convinced. It's a curse. The Islanders simply cannot beat the Philadelphia Flyers! If losing 23 of the last 24 games against the Flyers is not saying some sort of voodoo is going on, I don't know what will. Well...not exactly voodoo, but you catch my drift...right?

The Islanders started Evgeni Nabokov against the Flyers tonight. Nabokov was looking for career win number 300 but Nabokov hasn't had a rest in a while, so I definitely thought that Poulin would get the start.

When the Flyers decided the direction of the franchise was one that wasn’t going to be influenced by Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, outcry and uproar ensued.

The core of the team that made it within two games of hoisting the Stanley Cup and a second-place finish in the Eastern Conference the next year was sent packing.

Obviously, Carter and Richards were the biggest shoes to drop. The captain and his close friend were supposed to be the faces of the team for years to come. Not so much.

Ville Leino wasn’t re-signed and few had issue with it. Most could see that his deal in Buffalo was baseless and far too big.

Blair Betts and Darroll Powe were waived and traded respectively, and that was a sticking point with some. The two soldier-like penalty killers were given away and some feared the franchise couldn’t find anyone to replace their strong play.

Kris Versteeg? Traded. Dan Carcillo? See ya. Nikolay Zherdev? Of course he was free to go.

Although the first line will most likely continue to be the team’s most productive line, it doesn’t mean that the other lines won’t sprinkle in production when need to be.
