Hawks prepare to face hot Avs

After a disappointing 4-1 loss against the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night, the Hawks are looking to bounce back against a hot Avs team in Denver.

Halfway through their annual ‘circus trip’, the Hawks have earned four out of a potential six points in their first three games, and now are moving on to the US to round out the trip.

Blackhawks drop 3-2 loss to Avs in final season match-up

In their last meeting of the regular season, both the Blackhawks and Avalanche came out flying.

Duncan Keith had the first penalty of the game, a roughing call in front of the Blackhawks' net. The Avalanche put plenty of pressure in Chicago's end, but despite a handful of shots, the closest they got was a goalpost.

Brad Malone put the Avalanche on the board first with 1:36 left in the first, with a sharp-angle shot. Matt Duchene would stretch the lead to 2-0 just 19 seconds into the second period.

Patrick Kane would get the Blackhawks on the board after dancing through the Colorado zone and flipping the puck over Varlamov's shoulder to make it ...

Hawks overwhelmed by Avalanche in return to the United Center

After a dominant win against the Penguins at Soldier Field on Saturday, the Hawks would drop their third game this season to the Colorado Avalanche in a 4-2 home loss at the United Center.  Semyon Varlamov was stellar in net, stopping 36 shots for the Avs, while Corey Crawford would take the loss for the Hawks.

Maxime Talbot would get the Avalanche on the board first on Colorado’s 5th shot of the game off of a sneaky redirect near the left faceoff dot.

Flyers Back In Playoffs With Third Straight Win

The Flyers have the opportunity to head into the Olympic break with a four game winning streak and a spot in the playoffs to lose.

The Flyers won their third straight game on Thursday, beating the Colorado Avalanche 3-1. The rode another stellar performance by Steve Mason, who has allowed three goals in his three starts during the current winning streak.

Mason stopped 38 shots against Colorado to seal the win. His only hiccup came late in the third period when Nathan MacKinnon sneaked a shot between Mason and the left goal post that cut the Flyers lead at the time to 2-1.

Blackhawks drop another overtime game 3-2 to Avalanche

Sometimes, you need your goalie to steal a win for you, and that's what the Colorado Avalanche got out of Semyon Varlamov tonight at the United Center versus the Blackhawks.

Varlamov made 46 of 48 saves (.958 sv%) on a night where the Avs started a player short, and lost a defenseman early in the third. Colorado has a handful of players on IR, including PA Parenteau and Alex Tanguay, but despite that, they've been 5-1-1 in the new year. Their goalie has been a big part of that.

In that same stretch, the Blackhawks have gone just 2-1-4; so their silver lining is that they continue to eke out points in losses and remain in the top three of the Central division....

Varlamov Out-Duels Mason in Colorado

Steve Mason was every bit as good as he's been so far this season, which earned him first half stud honors.

But Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov was just a tiny bit better. Varlamov stopped 29 shots, the same as Mason, but allowed only one to get by him in a 2-1 win over the Flyers on Thursday.

A rare lapse in the mind of Sean Couturier, who also received honors in our report card, set up Colorado's first goal.

Hawks fall flat in opening game of Circus trip

The Hawks came out flat in their first game in their 7-game circus trip across the Western conference.  After bouncing back 5-1 against the Sharks on Tuesday, the Hawks got steamrolled against an Avs team that capitalized on every opportunity that was given to them.

Corey Crawford was pulled after 3 quick goals in the first after playing just 13:17 for Finnish netminder Antti Raanta.  Raanta made 13 stops on 15 shots in his first NHL start, albeit an abbrevia...

Game Preview: Flames vs Colorado Avalanche

The Flames head into Colorado tonight to face an Avalanche team that has seen five of their seven wins come on home ice at the Pepsi Center (5-2-1). This will be the second meeting between the clubs this season, with the Aves beating the Flames 6-3 on January 31st at the Dome. It was the Aves third straight victory over the Flames as they will look to make it four tonight.

Islanders Prepare for Avalanche

“And with the first overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the New York Islanders are proud to select John Tavares.”

After months of speculation leading up to the 2009 NHL draft, the Islanders rewarded their fan base after a long and painful season by using the first pick to select the longtime #1 ranked player in the draft.  It has been said that when top prospects remain at the top of a draft board for a long period of time, analysts tend to search so hard for their flaws that when they finally find one, it becomes significantly over exaggerated.

So it was with Tavares, who was ranked at the top of his draft class since about age 14. ...
