The Pittsburgh Penguins Display The Problems With NHL Officiating

The NHL fined the Isles last year $100,000 for the brawl game vs. the Pens, but the Pens did not get fined anything despite a player leaving the bench as a sixth skater to join a fight on the ice - which, by the way, means the head coach should be suspended for one game - he wasn't. But owner Mario Lemieux stated that the NHL didn't do enough to punish the Isles for that disgrace of a game.
Keep in mind that Matt Martin and Trevor Gillies received suspensions. They rightfully deserved them, and Godard got the 10 games required for leaving the bench, but the Penguins didn't receive any other suspensions or fines of any kind.
Lemieux, despite the one-sided disciplinary action, still felt that the league didn't do enough.

The NHL's choice not to suspend Nashville defenseman Shea Weber for his postgame actions on Henrik Zetterberg is pathetic and shameful. Weber has been fined $2,500 which is the maximum allowed under the current CBA. The NHL is failing its players and fans, particularly young ones with this negligence.

The Detroit Red Wings made history on Tuesday night with an NHL record, 21st consecutive win on home ice. For the most successful NHL franchise in the last 20 years, it appears that they have everything they could. Well....

Even with the Wings still owning the Central division, Western conference and NHL, the race is still very close, especially in the division.

As it stands now, the Central division's top 3 spots are within eight points of each other. Nashville has been playing well against their division counterparts ever since last season, but have lost two of the three contests against Detroit this season.

The Flyers are considered to be buyers in the coming weeks as the trade deadline rolls near.

Players like Nashville’s Ryan Suter and Shea Weber as well as Toronto’s Luke Schenn have been mentioned in numerous possible trade situations and rumors. But in the end, will it all matter for the Flyers?

Before this turns into a column writing off the Flyers, take a step back and look at the situation the team is in. They are currently eight points behind the Rangers for the Atlantic Division lead while resting with the fourth seed.

But on the other side of the Flyers, they are only eight points ahead of the ninth place Capitals. The Flyers could very easily be in the bottom half of the playoff tree when April rolls around and their possible match ups could spell doom.

While the Philadelphia Flyers have a successful record halfway through the season, there are still things that need to be improved upon down the stretch -- namely, defense.

The Flyers are 26-13-4 heading into their 43rd game of the season. They have the offensive depth it takes to make them Stanley Cup contenders, but a team needs to be balanced throughout the entire roster to go all the way.

The struggles of Ilya Bryzgalov in net for the Flyers has been highly publicized.

He is not playing at the level expected of him.

However, the 128 goals allowed by the Flyers so far this season have not all been Bryzgalov’s responsibility. The defense has struggled, and struggled mightily in some cases.

Just three points separated the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators going into their game last night played at the Bridgestone Arena in Tennessee. The Stars were looking to bounce back after they lost were beaten by the Red Wings 5-4 on Wednesday night in an absolute thriller at the American Airlines Center. Nashville welcomed back their captain Shea Weber into the line-up after missing four games with concussion.

So far the series is split between Detroit and Nashville.

The Red Wings dominated against the Predators in November with 4-1 victory at home, but Nashville managed to comeback against Detroit just two weeks ago on home ice with a 4-3 win. And there is much more than the series riding on this game.

Right now the Wings are third in their division, with very little room for error both ahead and behind them. Even closer is the race to stay in the Western Conference's top eight. The Wings are currently sixth in the conference, with the Preds sitting at eighth.

Overtime is becoming a friend to the Habs on this road trip. Two games two overtime victories against western conference teams. Peter Budaj, playing in his second game of the season was sensational stopping 25 of the 26 shots he faced in a fast paced entertaining game.

The Nashville Predators played the 1000th game in their history. Barry Trotz also was coaching on this mile-stone night - only the fourth man in the history of the NHL to coach 1000 games with the same team. The others are Al Arbour - Islanders, Lindy Ruff (Sabres), Billy Reah (Blackhawks).
