Pens Win 6th Straight; Maatta's Exceptional Play Is Turning Heads

With ten regulars missing from the lineup…

Forget it; the Pittsburgh Penguins are not just overcoming injuries anymore. They aren’t just kids filling in for starters and coming away with a victory here and there. They are a deep team, a talented team, a team that is playing like they should.

With a 5-2 victory on home ice against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, the Pittsburgh Penguins firmly move into first place in the Eastern Conference. They are just two points behind league leading Chicago.

They have won six straight games, 11 of their past 12, and nine straight at home.

The team’s goals against average over the past 12 games is a miniscule 1...

Hawks special teams shine in win against Panthers

The Blackhawks were dominant in a 6-2 win against the Florida Panthers, scoring 3 of their 5 goals on the power play and staying perfect on the penalty kill.  The win was tainted by an injury to starting netminder Corey Crawford, who lasted only 13:45 in the first period before being replaced by Antti Rannta.  Raanta was solid, making 28 saves and allowing only two goals.

The Hawks came out jumping in the first, and needed only 70 seconds to take the lead.  After a bad penalty by former Hawk Tomas Kopecky for high-sticking Niklas Hjalmarsson, Patrick Sharp blasted a high shot from the point on the ensuing power play past goalie Scott Clemmensen, who was screened on th...

Isles Fall In OT To Visiting Pens

Tonight, the Islanders led most of the game. As is the norm, it was the first line of John Tavares, Thomas Vanek and Kyle Okposo who led the way.

After defenseman Thomas Hickey forced a turnover with the Pens skating into the Islanders’ zone, the Isles top line skates into the Pittsburgh zone. Tavares hits Okposo with a pass and the forward skates up the left wing. Okposo then backhands the puck on net where it ricochets off of Pitt defender Olli Maatta and past goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Pregame 12/3: Islanders vs. Penguins

The Islanders turn the calendar to December and host the Pittsburgh Penguins at Nassau Coliseum tonight for the first time since game 6 of the playoffs last spring. This concludes a 4 game home stand before heading on a West coast road trip. This is the 3rd of 4 meetings between the teams this season and the season series is a win each for both teams.

Isles fall in Pittsburgh on Late D Breakdown and Crosby Goal

After falling behind 2-0 and 3-1, the Islanders came back to tie the game at 3 against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins, but Sidney Crosby put in the game deciding goal with less than 2 minutes to play in the 3rd, preventing the Islanders from at least getting one point, which they deserved.

Schenn Scores Twice In Flyers Win Over Penguins

Things are starting to look up in Flyers land.

Brayden Schenn scored twice and Ray Emery was a rock in net as the Flyers won their third straight, beating the Penguins, 2-1, Wednesday night. It's their first official winning streak of the season as they improve to 7-10-1.

Things looked shakey for the Flyers in the first period as they were out-shot 16-8. Pittsburgh came out firing in the opening minute of play and seemingly took a 1-0 lead.

A mad dash in front of Emery resulting from a defensive breakdown by Braydon Coburn resulted in a Chris Kunitz goal. The referees immediately turned to Toronto for help, which determined that Kunitz kicked the puck into the net, negating the opening tally.

Gameday at Pittsburgh: Emery Gets Start

The Flyers have won two straight, out-scoring their opponents 9-2 in the process. What is this sorcery you ask? It may very well be the team awaking from its slumber. What better way to test that than against the Penguins tonight on the national stage.

Penguins Drop Two Straight; Looking for Healthy Returns to Provide Consistency

The Penguins have now dropped two straight and are just 5-5 in their last ten games. Their offense has been struggling as of late and the defense has found little consistency following the injury to Rob Scuderi. So the question is, what can the Penguins do find success?

On the Defensive Side – With Rob Scuderi out of the lineup, the Penguins have been forced to alter their defensive pairings. Unfortunately, now Paul Martin is considered day to day and will most likely miss his second straight game on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Flyers. With all of that in mind, the Penguins do not have too many options other than to alter their pairings.

The first Penguins pairing...

Penguins Finally Snap Losing Streak; Suffer Devastating Losses on the Injury Front

After suffering three straight losses to likes of the Colorado Avalanche, the New York Islanders, and the Toronto Maple Leafs the Penguins finally beat the Carolina Hurricanes.

An entire week of losses gave the Penguins their first three game losing streak since the early going of the 2011-2012 season. In the three game losing streak the NHL’s leading point producer, Sidney Crosby, was held to just a single goal and no assists.

To be completely fair in this assessment the Penguins were still impressive in their five on five play. The Pens outshot the competition by an average of 12 shots per game and clearly had an advantage in time of possession, but the club was ...
