Bolts Trade Rumours

As the deadline approaches, the Tampa Bay Lightning will be looking to add a few pieces to the puzzle as they look to make a deep playoff run. Rookie GM Steve Yzerman has been shopping around for a while now, being active in all aspects of the transaction world, signing Simon Gagne, claiming Mattias Ritola off waivers, signing Marc-Andre Bergeron as a free agent and trading for Dwayne Roloson. The Lightning already has a solid cast of forwards up front, but with Ryan Malone out until the playoffs with a muscle tear in his abdomen, the Bolts might need a top nine forward to fill his void. Players such as Mike Grier, Cory Stillman and Daninius Zubrus have been linked to the Lightning, with...

Holy Roli What a Goalie V.2

Courtesy NHL TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Dwayne Roloson made 38 saves for his fourth shutout this season, Teddy Purcell scored two early first period goals, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 on Tuesday night in a matchup of the Eastern Conference's top two teams. All four of Roloson's shutouts have come in 11 games since the Lightning obtained the 41-year old from the New York Islanders on New Year's Day. Tampa Bay went up 2-0 just 1:21 into the game on Purcell's first career two-goal game. Steven Stamkos, getting his NHL-leading 39th goal of the season, and Steve Downie also scored for the Lightning, who have a six-game winning streak. Tampa Bay, which has won...

Thompson Inks 2 Year Extension

Courtesy TSN The Tampa Bay Lightning signed centre Nate Thompson to a 2-year extension, $1.8 million extension on Tuesday. Thompson will receive $950,000 in the first year of the deal and $850,000 in the second year. The Anchorage, Alaska native was claimed off waivers from the New York Islanders last season. This year, he has 7 goals and 10 assists in 51 games. Thompson was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 2003 but only appeared in four games with the club in the 2006-07 season. The Islanders claimed him off waivers early in the 2008 campaign and he played 82 games over two seasons on Long Island. Good for Tampa as they retain the gritty centreman. He displays a lot ...

Rebrand Failure

I was busy working on an article about the NHL Guardians when I stumbled across the Lightning's new logo. And I threw my pen on the ground and said out loud, "What in the world is this?!?!" I really have no idea why the team needs to change the logo AGAIN. The logo they have now is clean cut and I really like it. The only good thing about the new jersey is it still uses the Tampa Bay Blue from the current third jerseys. I mean, seriously, the new one looks like the Gatorade logo. It's scary how identical they are: There is no longer any black in the jerseys, which totally takes away from the Stanley Cup Championship team from 2004. The on ice product is going in the ri...

Holy Roli What a Goalie

The Tampa Bay Lightning skated away with a 2-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Dwayne Roloson stopped 26 shots for his 3rd shutout in ten games with the Bolts and also his 26th career shutout. Tampa started the game with the foot on the accelerator scoring two goals from Simon Gagne and Teddy Purcell. Victor Hedman had a particularly strong game, joining the rush on several occasions and set up Gagne's 9th of the year five minutes in. Teddy Purcell then scored on a very similar play, driving hard to the net to convert Brett Clark's feed 12 minutes in. Tampa outshot the Leafs 17-4 in the first. The second period brought a different Leafs team, the one that scratched and clawed it...

Yzerman's Biggest Deal

After watching the Tampa Bay Lightning's demolition of the Atlanta Thrashers 7-1 last night, I began think about the task set ahead for the rebuilding/rebuilt franchise. Steven Stamkos scored his league leading 38th goal of the year last night (albeit off his chest), and with Stammer heading into the offseason as a restricted free agent, Lightning GM Steve Yzerman has a very huge task ahead of him: retaining Stamkos for years to come. Stamkos is making $875K this season in the last year of his entry level deal, but his cap hit is $3.725 million because of bonuses. Last year's Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy winner has a choice to make and is seemingly a pretty easy one: A.) sign with Tampa...

Breaking News: Tampa Bay Lightning acquire Simon Gagné

The Ilya Kovalchuk floodgates have officially been opened. Reports are surfacing around the net and twitter that Philadelphia Flyers forward Simon Gagné has been traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. No word on a return yet, but we will update this point as the news is made available. UPDATE 2:30PM TSN has confirmed that Gagné has been traded in exchange for Matt Walker and a 4th round pick in 2011. So there you have it. Mark Trible will have more on the deal soon. Lightning Re-Sign Martin St-Louis to 4 Year Extension

Stevie Y is getting things done in Tampa Bay. Not an hour after he was allowed to begin negotiations with Martin St-Louis on the subject of an extension, who would have become an unrestricted free agent in 2011, the Tampa Bay Lightning have resigned one of their top forwards to a 4-year contract extension, according to an official tweet from the lightning. The contract is worth $22.5 million, putting Marty's salary at just over $5.5 million per season. A very digestible deal for the Lightning. More to come. Breaking News: Yzerman to be Named Bolts GM

According to Sportsnet and various other Twitter sources, the Tampa Bay Lightning will hold a press conference at 3PM to announce hall of famer Steve Yzerman as their new General Manager. The move will make Yzerman one of the richest GMs in NHL history (a bold move considering the Lightning's money woes), and will end a 26 year relationship between Stevie Y and the Detroit Red Wings, where he won 3 Stanley Cups and played in 10 all-star games as a player. More recently, Yzerman built Canada's gold medal winning Olympic team. Details to come.
