Breaking: Letang To Return To Penguins Lineup Tonight

In a brief and sudden press conference on Wednesday morning, Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero announced that defenseman Kris Letang will be returning to the lineup.

Letang, 26, suffered a stroke in January while the Penguins were on a road trip out west. It is important to note that once Letang had successfully underwent treatment, including blood thinners; he would be medically cleared to play.

“He's at no further risk to suffer a stroke playing hockey than going to grocery store.” Said Ray Shero at the press conference

He is correct in saying so. Letang has a heart condition that doesn’t change with elevated heart rates, unlike the heart condition...

Bringing a Knife to a Gunfight; Beat Up Penguins Get Thrashed By Surging Flyers

Fleury was strong despite allowing seven goals.

Yah, you read that correctly. Marc-Andre Fleury allowed seven goals in just four periods of hockey, but he was good. He was actually really good. In Sunday’s game, there were at least five amazing saves that stoned the Flyers, only to let them score shortly after from poor defensive coverage. Fleury never lost his cool. Something that shows a more mature, prepared Fleury. If he can have a strong bounce back week after this weekend, then all will be fine in the Steel City.

Taylor Pyatt should be back in the minors.

He is big. That is about all I can say when it comes to a proper scouting report.

Since coming to ...

Kesler Report Becomes Official; The Penguins Are Foolish To View This As A Fix

When the rumor came out of the woodwork just a few days back, I was taken by surprise. I figured the Penguins were more interested in acquiring winger depth than trying to reestablish the dominant three center model that won them a Stanley Cup.

But what do I know about building a competitive hockey team.

Pittsburgh is reported by just about every major outlet to be heavily interested in acquiring Kesler’s services. He would be an instant upgrade at the third line center position and has the ability to play wing when needed; however, there is a big problem with this.

For one, Kesler would join the Penguins at a time of depletion. With Pascal Dupuis and Beau Bennett ...

Penguins Start the New Year Off Right; The Top Six Still Remains a Question Moving Forward

With the injury list for Pittsburgh starting to cool down in the New Year, the Penguins looked to regain their top form.

Unfortunately for the Penguins, an injury to top six forward Pascal Dupuis has left a major void in the roster. His top end speed and defensively responsible style made him a very good compliment to the offensive powers that are Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz.

In his absence, Pittsburgh was able to go 9-2-1 in January. Crosby had his production dip slightly into the range of 1.3 points per game, just below his 1.45 ppg career average. Since his departure Crosby has had a revolving door of wingers including the following: Tanner Glass, Jayson Megna, Brandon S...

Home Record Streak Snapped at 13, Alarming Trends Come to Light in Loss

On January 20th, 2014 the Pittsburgh Penguins suffered their first home loss in over two months.

The complaints start with a 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. With the healthiest lineup of the season, a full four days off, and home ice advantage, Pittsburgh managed to play one of the worst games they have played all season.

Allowing five goals is always unacceptable. When a team allows five goals to a bottom percentile scoring threat, then you have an issue.

Since the Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten back a healthy Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, their GAA has risen considerably.

Since the return of Malkin and Letang the Penguins have given up 22 goals in just six ga...

Maatta Finnishes Capitals, Pens Win 13th Straight At Home

The Penguins only held the lead in Wednesday night's game against the Washington Capitals for 1:54. The good thing is that it was the final 1:54 of the game after rookie defenseman Olli Maatta finally put the Penguins on top for a 4-3 win.  The Penguins have now won 13 straight at home setting a new franchise record.

The Capitals got on the board first more than halfway through the first period when Brooks Laich scored shorthanded after a turnover on a breakout pass by Kris Letang. Laich paitently peeled around a fallen Letang who expected a pass before beating Marc-Andre Fleury to the blocker side.

Letang made up for it in the second period tying the game at th...

Wings Help Howard Reach 100th Career Win Against Phoenix

Detroit Red Wings steal their 13th consecutive home game from the Phoenix Coyotes!

First Period: The Wings came out strong at the start of the period. It took 9 minutes of playing before a goal was made. Phoenix was the one to steal the first goal, which was scored by Vrbata. After Vrbata’s goal, the Wings seemed to have a rough second half of the period. The last couple minutes had good pressure from the Wings though. With only 51 seconds left of the first, the Wings finally got a shot past Smith. Filppula made a beautiful goal with an assist from White. The period ended at a 1 to 1 tie. SOG: 13 Detroit vs 9 Phoenix.

Second Period: The...

Game Day: Anaheim Ducks @ Phoenix Coyotes

The contract saga between Kyle Turris and the Phoenix Coyotes concluded yesterday in a two-year, $2.8M deal that will see Turris earn $1.2M this season and $1.6M the next.  Both sides spoke amicably of one another to the point where it's unclear if at some point later on this season, after enough on-ice exposure, Don Maloney will eventually grant Turris' wish of a trade. According to TSN, there are at least three teams currently interested (Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto).

Nevertheless, there is a game tonight.  The Anaheim Ducks roll into town after having won just one game out of their last ten, and the Coyotes dropped their last game against Washington.  Bot...

Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes @ Buffalo Sabres

Still licking their wounds after surrendering yet another game-winning goal within the dying seconds of the third period, this time against the Flyers on Thursday, the Phoenix Coyotes roll into Buffalo this evening to take on the Sabres at 7:00 p.m. EST.

The 2-1 loss was their first of this roadtrip that sees them head over to Washington after the end of this game, eventually returning home to face Anaheim on Wednesday.

Buffalo is counting on Jhonas Enroth to step up in Ryan Miller's absence, as the former is expected to make his fourth start in a row tonight for the 12-7-0 Sabres.  Phoenix last beat the Sabres in early 2008, and have lost five games in a ro...

Game Day: Los Angeles Kings @ Phoenix Coyotes

In the first of two meetings between the Kings and the Coyotes in October, one team is looking to build a three-game winning streak while the other is looking to rebound from a paltry showing that saw them outshot 35-16 against the Chicago Blackhawks and outscored 5-2.  In the "probably bad news" category, however, the last time the Coyotes managed this little offense was against Los Angeles.

The Kings have three consecutive wins against the Coyotes and are looking to come out of tonight's game in similar fashion, while Phoenix is trying to move past Tuesday's performance with the knowledge that a big win is needed tonight.
