Herder Memorial Trophy Videos

Here's a couple of goal highlight compilation videos from the 2007 and 2008 Herder Memorial Trophy winning games. The Herder Memorial Trophy is the Holy Grail in Newfoundland senior hockey, first awarded in the 1930s, before the era of Canadian Confederation. Numerous teams, both active and defunct, have hoisted the trophy, such as the Corner Brook Royals, Clarenville Caribous, and Deer Lake Red Wings, just to name a few. One team, the Corner Brook Royals, went on to participate in the Allan Cup, the Holy Grail of senior hockey in all of Canada, and won it. That happened in 1986. First clip is from Game 6 of the 2007 Herder Championship, held in Corner Brook and featuring the Deer Lake Re...

Letters to BJ: NHL Discipline

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Letters to Bon Jon Bovi. On today's show, we will be reading e-mails from viewers while geologist Colin J. Campbell discusses why the league tends to pick their spots when it comes to suspensions. Let's get started! Our first e-mail comes from Mile-Anne Hedgeduck. I am unfamiliar with the name, so I will conclude it is a Klingon or an Avalanche player. It writes, "Dear BJ, I have your dog. I am also a Blackhawks fan." So far so good, Mile-Anne. Unfortunately for some happy family and their three year old, I do not own a dog. "Why is it that Niklas Hjalmarsson got the same two-game suspension as a fellatio gesture?" Video Low-Down: Hjalmarsson vs...

Video: Shootout Goal by Kaspars Daugavins

It's quite a popular video on YouTube. Kaspars Daugavins wows the crowd at Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland on October 3 by doing something unusual in the shootout. Raw video (not by me)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAs4PJN7CYw And this is the view from the broadcast cameras, and shown in the highlights on CBC News: Here and Now on October 4... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tehp8yH6Lgg

Thank You Notes

I'm going to make this introduction short and irrelevant, and no it's not about the Montreal Canadiens. That will come in a little bit. The preseason is underway and we are now exactly two weeks away from the start of the NHL season, also known as the Leafs offseason. So I thought, what better way to kick it all off than by handing out some thank you's to those who deserve it, so let's get started, Thank You....Darryl Sutter, for bringing back some old timers to play this season. It's a good way to get the fans excited about nothing by bringing back a couple of old timers from way back in 2008. Thank You.....Brian Burke, for bringing in some real players so Leaf fans can go out and...

Twitter #Hashtag of the Week - #DanEllisProblems

Am I, right now, trying to capitalize on a twitter trend? Maybe. But really, TCL has been a good way for me (and of course many others) to share things about hockey that we find amusing, beyond even the Montreal Canadiens blogs. Beyond the recaps, analysis and news discussion, we always hoped that this website would be a means for people to enjoy themselves, and to maybe learn about things that don't always reach the mainstream sources. In a few weeks, the TCL team will be opening a second blog, Better With Popcorn, where I will be able to make fun of celebrities, and talk about movies and video games, among other things, satisfying another one of my lifelong dreams. But u...
