Blackhawks' Olympic Effort: Day 7

The quarterfinals day started with Sweden playing Slovenia, the underdog of the competition so far, along with Latvia. The Swedes dominated the game from the beginning of the first, and kept the game in their hands throughout, even with a solid effort from Slovenia.

 

The game would end 5-0 for Sweden, taking them safely to the semifinals. Alexander Steen, Daniel Sedin, Loui Eriksson and Carl Hagelin would be the goalscorers for Sweden, with Hagelin with two. Blackhawks’ Johnny Oduya got an assist on Eriksson’s goal.

Blackhawks' Olympic Effort: Day 6

Today saw 8 of the men’s teams battle it out in qualifiers for the quarterfinals to play against the teams that already qualified: Sweden, USA, Canada, and Finland. The day started with Slovenia/Austria, which ended in a 4-0 win for Slovenia, a team that started off a bit shakily and seemingly found their feet. This is the first Olympics in which Slovenia has a men’s hockey team participating, and they’ll face Sweden in their quarterfinal.

Day 4 of the Olympics hockey men’s tournament was packed full of intensity, and started with an upset for Team Slovakia, who was beaten by Slovenia 3-1 in a game where they were touted as the favorite.

 

Team Slovenia, in their first Olympics, have little depth - they played their NHL star forward Anze Kopitar for 26 minutes in the game,but they still managed three goals from three different players: Kopitar, Rok Ticar, and captain Tomas Razingar. Blackhawks’ Olympic Effort: Day 3

The first day of day 3 of the Sochi Olympics men’s hockey tournament saw Czech Republic face off against Latvia and earning themselves a win. Michal Roszival, of the Blackhawks, skated on a line with Tomas Kaberle, and was on the ice for each of the Czechs goals.

Blackhawks’ Olympic Effort: Day 1

Team Sweden opened the men’s tournament at the Sochi Olympic by playing Czech Republic, while Latvia faced Switzerland. The Bolshoi Ice Dome was loud with Czech fans coming en masse to support their national team.

 

But in the end, it was Sweden that came out on top, led by defenseman Erik Karlsson, who scored 2 goals to help Sweden to a 4-2 win. Before even the halfway mark, Sweden was up 4-0, with 2 goals in the first period and 2 goals in the second.

A quick peek at the Blackhawks' European Olympians

The Blackhawks are one of the NHL teams with the most players headed to Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Along with the three players joining team Canada and Patrick Kane joining team USA, there are six players joining their European country teams.

 

Three of them have been called up by team Sweden: Johnny Oduya, Marcus Kruger and Niklas Hjalmarsson. Oduya is a 2010 Olympian while both Kruger and Hjalmarsson will participate in their first Olympics.
