Injuries Are Mounting. Are you scared?

Lidstrom. Datsyuk. Howard. Bertuzzi. Ericsson. Kindl. Eaves. All banged up. Can the Detroit Red Wings win another Stanley Cup with their best defenseman, forward, and goalie out? Up until this point in the season, the Wings have been relatively healthy and have definitely played like it. Now, we are at a point where the “law of averages” has kicked in, and the once healthy Red Wings are starting to pile up injuries. Maybe the better question is, can the Wings win their division?

The Red Wings may play next with seven starters out of the lineup. That’s scary, even if we are talking about the 2002 Red Wings. Is this team getting old? Does Mike Babcock run them too ha...

Should the Red Wings Have Traded for Jeff Carter?

When news broke that Pavel Datsyuk was out for 2-3 weeks from a minor knee surgery, everyone in Hockeytown panicked. After a few minutes, a few tweets, and a few deep breaths later, we were assured that Pav was going to be okay and in fact it was just a minor surgery. It was taken as a precaution so the Wings’ best player would be 100% come playoff time.

I’m not one to generally panic, since the Red Wings have been in stretches without their best players before. However, the Winged Wheel has had a great season going so far, and we are entering into a portion of the season where points are at a premium. We all saw what happened last year in Game 7 of the Western Conferenc...

Red Wings Link Checks: 02/24/2012

The Detroit Red Wings home streak finally ended this week at 23 consecutive home game wins, the NHL's best. While many Wings fans where let down, we still can be proud of the amazing accomplishment our team has made this season. The ending winning streak is not the only big news the Wings had come to them this week, they also signed a two year contract with a current player and had a new player join the team.

Check out the recent articles on The Checking Line to check up with the Wings!

The Checking Line:

One wouldn't think the home winning streak coming to an end is a good thing. But, Kyle Busch explains to us why it actually is a good thing and tells us of the...

Last-Second Eurotwin Heroics Extend Streak

Tonight's game was a hard fought battle for two key points between division rivals. The game was close and had a playoff atmosphere. Before the game Detroit was ahead of Nashville by eight points but the Predators had a game in hand. Nashville was looking to catch St. Louis for second place in the Central and Detroit sought to put more space between them and 2nd seeded Vancouver. With the win Detroit extends their NHL record with their 22nd consecutive home win.

Detroit had the edge in performance and shots in the first, outshooting Nashville 14-9 in the opening period. Johan Franzen put Detroit on the board at 12:44 in the first with his team-leading 23rd goal off a spectacular...

Tussle At the Top

The Red Wings will attempt to rise above .500 on the road and be the first to win a road game in their season series with Vancouver tonight. The teams have split the season series with both teams winning at home, Detroit 2-0 and Vancouver 4-2. Both teams are playing well, Detroit has won eight of nine and Vancouver was 7-2-2 in January. The Red Wings hold a 3 point lead over the Canucks for the top seed in the West.

A win can put Detroit five points ahead of #2 Vancouver in the West and #4 Nashville for the Central lead. The Red Wings have also won three of their last five games at Rogers Arena.

Bertuzzi: A Threat Nobody is Worried About

It's no secret to anyone who follows the Red Wings: they're a great team with a lot of talent.

It's also to nobody's surprise that this talented team is having a near-stellar season up to this point. The team's Thursday night victory over Phoenix sent them to the top spot in the division, conference and League.

Aside from the stellar performances by Jimmy Howard and Pavel Datsyuk, who else should other teams be concerned about when facing Detroit? The easy answer is everybody not named Jonathan Ericsson, but the player of interest for this feature is Todd Bertuzzi.

Big Bert, as fans and players know him, is far past his most productive seasons in the ...

A Team Desperate To Shine

The Detroit Red Wings made history last night as they set a new franchise record for consecutive home wins, which is very telling about their performance this season.

In a dominating display of both offense and defense, the Wings have extended their win streak at the Joe to 15 games. Jimmy Howard earned his fifth shut out of the season and Pavel Datsyuk earned his 700th career point. Last night's victory does not reflect the team's lackluster road performance though.

"We haven't done as well as want on the road," said Jimmy Howard after last night's win against Buffalo.

The Wings are only 11-13-0 on the road this season, which ...

Wings Set Franchise Record At 15 Home Game Wins Against The Sabres

The Detroit Red Wings win their 15th consecutive home game against the Buffalo Sabres. The Wings broke the past franchise records for consecutive home game wins and helped Howard receive his 10th career shutout!

First Period: The first period appeared to be a very successful period for the Wings. With only one penalty and three goals leading them to the second period, anyone would be assured. However, the Wings and Sabres fought back and forth for the puck which is proven in the shots on goal stats for the period. The puck control was not as solid as it could be for Detroit. A great first goal from Zetterberg took the Wings to a 1 to 0 lead. Toward...

Wings Go For 14th Straight Home Win on the 14th

With Friday the 13th in the past, Detroit faces off against Chicago today on home ice for a nationally televised matinee. The Wings are coming off a 3-2 comeback victory against Phoenix that was Mike Babcock's 400th win and Jimmy Howard's 100th. Detroit seeks to tie their franchise record for consecutive home wins set during the 1964-65 season. Only two points separate the teams, with St. Louis sitting in between them.

The two previous games have been just as close as their place in the standings with both being decided 3-2. Chicago won once in regulation and Detroit won last week in overtime. Today's game should be no different.

Round 1: Blackhawks edge Red Wings, 3-2

Five more of those please!

The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings put on sixty minutes of playoff-like hockey in front of a season high 22,166 at the United Center Friday night and the Hawks prevailed in the end with a 3-2 victory.

For sixty minutes, it seemed as though the only stoppages in play were for the two intermissions. The game opened with five or six minutes of continuous, back-and-forth action before the first whistle was ever blown.

Justin Abdelkader gave the Red Wings the early lead half-way through the first period after a big rebound was given up by Hawks goalie Corey Crawford. It seemed to sit there in the slot forever after the initial Drew Miller ...
