Leafs Blank Jets 4-0

TheCheckingLine.com - The Toronto Maple Leafs handed Winnipeg their second loss in as many days on Thursday night as the Jets faced off against the Leafs at the Air Canada Centre.

The Jets came out with some energy in the first period, but that was quickly countered by the Leafs as they generated some quality scoring chances. Just 4:49 into the opening frame, Phill Kessel jumped on a nice pass from Joffrey Lupul to put Toronto up 1-0.

Toronto continued to up the pressure in the first, but Chris Mason stood strong between the pipes. Prior to tonight, Mason had won his last four starts.

In the second period, it didn't take lon...

Game Preview #40 - Leafs vs Jets

For the second time in less than a week the Toronto Maple Leafs (19-15-5) and the Winnipeg Jets (19-15-5) will square off in a crucial Eastern Conference showdown.  On the final day of 2011, the Jets defeated Toronto 3-2 thanks in large part to their power play (and the referee's). Although the Leafs dominated the game and outscored the Jets 2-1 at even strength, Winnipeg capitalized on two of their six power plays as they squeaked out a one goal victory. Most people reading this though I'm sure must have watched that frustrating game, so it...

Burke will target Getzlaf, Ryan, Perry

The Anaheim Ducks are prepared for a roster overhaul, and its three star players in Bobby Ryan, Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf are available for the right price, according to Ducks general manager Bob Murray.

The news is a minor surprise as the Ducks are two points removed from being the worst team in the National Hockey League. Moreover, Ryan was available barely a month ago before Murray removed him from the trade market and instead hired head coach Bruce Boudreau in hopes of providing his club with a spark.

Nothing changed.

"I thought they'd figure out when we changed coaches that time was running, the clock...

Off on the Right Foot - Leafs Handle Lightning 7-3

Having ended 2011 on a mini slump (0-2-1) the Toronto Maple Leafs were looking to get off to a solid start in 2012 as they took on the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. With the Leafs struggling heading into the game and the Lightning on a hot streak (5-1-1) it seemed like the script was written before the game began. Once Vincent Lecavalier scored just over a minute in, the fans at the ACC grew restless and most blue and white supporters' stomachs began to churn. However the script was flipped on the next shift when Nazem Kadri drew a penalty. Joffrey Lu...

Game Preview #39 - Leafs vs Lightning

On November 22, 2011 an injury ravaged Toronto Maple Leafs (18-15-5) went in and defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning (17-17-3) by a score of 7-1 in their own barn. Toronto had failed to score a goal in both trips into Tampa last season, so the 7 goal outburst was a welcome sight. Since that big victory the Leafs have sputtered going 6-7-3. The Leafs - for the first time this season - have slipped out of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. An absolutely horrible penalty kill has been the downfall of the Leafs in their last three games (0-2-1). Hopefu...

There are 30 NHL Teams, Not 23

With this years version of the Winter Classic in the rear view mirror, speculation has begun as to who will participate in next year’s annual showdown. Rumours were swirling yesterday that the city of Detroit would host the classic, but their opponent for the game was still unknown. While it hasn’t been confirmed, an original six city like Detroit makes plenty of sense. Considering the Red Wings are an elite franchise in the NHL and the city its...

P.A. Parenteau: The Isles Unsung Hero

I wrote a piece back in October entitled, "P.A. Perfect?" that discussed whether or not the first line winger would be able to continue on his hot streak that began at the start of the season. As of now, according to TSN's calculations, he is on pace for a 68 point season. Those 68 points would be spread about 14 goals and 54 assists, a production total that his line mates Matt Moulson and John Tavares are more or less both on pace for as well.

I say that because when you look at the Islanders statistics, those three are the very top in the points category with Parenteau and Moulson tied for 28 for the team lead and JT right behind them with 27. After that, the offense dwindles with defenseman Mark Streit checking in with 18 points and Frans Nielsen being the next forward in line with a total of 15 points in 33 games.

Yikes.

But I am not here to talk about the Islanders terrible offensive production that has plagued them all season long. Parenteau, as stated in the past, is a player that many felt would be the odd man out, seeing himself off the Island by the end of the year

Islanders Get Mowed Down By Leafs 5-3

The Islanders took on the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night in both teams final game before the holiday break. With the loss to the Rangers on Thursday night, the Islanders were definitely lacking confidence and it showed.

The Isles faced a Maple Leafs team who are having a pretty good season so far. Even with some injury...

Game Preview #35 - Islanders vs Leafs

Following a massive victory last night at home against the Buffalo Sabres, the Toronto Maple Leafs (17-13-4) are back on the road to face off against the New York Islanders (11-15-6) in their final game before Christmas. This will mark the third time this season the Leafs will play the second half of a back to back, on the road, following a big home victory. The first time came after the Leafs defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, only to lose the following night in Ottawa. The second time Toronto came into Carolina off of a massive 7-1 against the Washington C...

Lesson Learned - Leafs Over Sabres 3-2

In what was a huge game for both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres, the boys in blue and white managed to fight through some adversity and hold off the Sabres for an inspiring 3-2 victory at the Air Canada Centre. Entering the game with only one point separating them in the standings (the Leafs held that small advantage), the picture became much different as the final buzzer sounded when the Leafs found themselves sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference while the Sabres fell to 11th.
