Game Preview #67 - Penguins vs Leafs

The time for moral victories is long over for this season, but one has to think that the Toronto Maple Leafs (30-29-7) feel pretty good about themselves despite the loss last night. The Leafs have an opportunity tonight to quickly put the memory of last night's tough and hard fought loss to the Boston Bruins behind them as they face off tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins (39-21-5). The last time the Leafs were in this building they blew a late 4-1 third period lead and ended up losing in a shootout. Jonas Gustavsson was on the hook for that loss an...

Game Preview #66 - Leafs vs Bruins

With the Toronto Maple Leafs (30-28-7) sitting five points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the 8th and final playoff position - albeit the Leafs have two games in hand - tonight's matchup against the Boston Bruins (38-23-3) is a must win game for the blue and white. New coach Randy Carlyle had a successful debut against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, but how the Leafs fare against the Bruins tonight will be more of an indicator as to how much of an impact Carlyle has on the squad. The Bruins have gone 4-0-0 against Toronto this season outscoring their...

Grabovski re-signs, Leafs fans exhale

Mikhail Grabovski has signed a five-year contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

His cap-hit will be $5.5-million, making him the Leafs’ highest-paid forward---that is, until Phil Kessel signs an extension. The cap-hit ranks him 36th amongst forwards, tied with Shawn Horcoff. As a comparable, some of the players that make within $250-thousand more or less than Grabovski are:

A Fresh Start - Leafs Defeat Canadiens 3-1

On a night in which the Toronto Maple Leafs played their first game since 2008 without Ron Wilson behind the bench, the boys in blue and white defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 at the Bell Centre. While one needs to reserve judgement for the next little while until new coach Randy Carlyle can implement his systems, there were many elements to last nights game that leaves fans feeling optimistic. Defensively the Leafs were dramatically better on the night, there were no glaring mistakes that led to odd man rushes against. The Leaf forwards were also much b...

Game Preview #65 - Canadiens vs Leafs

Hey, there's a game tonight! While all the talk has been focused on the Toronto Maple Leafs (29-28-7) and the replacement of Ron Wilson as coach of the team with Randy Carlyle, the Leafs are in la belle provence tonight to face off against their oldest rival in the Montreal Canadiens (25-30-10). If you have been on vacation or in a coma since February 7th you might not be aware of the fact that the Leafs have gone an ugly 1-9-1 since that day causing them to fall out of the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. While sitting only five points back of the 8...

Carlyle hiring a precursor to active off-season

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ downward spiral may have generated positive news with the hiring of head coach Randy Carlyle, replacing Ron Wilson after four years.

Fans should expect an adjustment period for the Leafs, however, as Carlyle will infuse a new brand of hockey compared to Wilson’s “run ‘n gun” tactics. Carlyle focuses on structured hockey and emphasizes on strong defensive play. If a player is careless without the puck and refuses to adapt to Carlyle’s system, that player will warm the bench. His brash approach ensures no non-sense and this could fit well with the developing Leafs---especially on the backend.

That said, Carlyle isn&rsq...

Hawks burn Leafs 5-4

Another Original Six matchup is always fun. This matchup again saw two teams that do not face each other much and two teams that are looking to get back on the winning track. The Leafs are coming off of their own losing streak where they have lost 8 of their last 10. The Hawks coming off of 3 straight losses desperately need to keep gaining points to keep pace in the Western Conference.

The Maple Leafs themselves were in need of points as well. They are currently out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture in 10th place but are only four points behind. So they too would be skating with an air of desperation.

Blackhawks seek to begin a late-season surge vs Leafs tonight

The Chicago Blackhawks fanbase held its breath as the trade deadline approached, wondering what magical trade that Stan Bowman might possibly manage to pull off. The "puck-moving defenseman" or the "second-line center" that the team had coveted all season? Perhaps the kind of blockbuster trade that nobody saw coming, one of the Hawks' stars for another team's stars? A goalie to help bail out Crawford and Emery?

At the deadline, however, none of these scenarios happened. The Blackhawks picked up one defenseman, Johnny Oduya, from the Winnipeg Jets; and shipped off John Scott to the NY Rangers. Scott had played 29 games for Chicago with an average TOI ...

Game Preview #64 - Blackhawks vs Leafs

1-8-1 in their last 10 games. The Toronto Maple Leafs (29-27-7) will once again attempt to bust out of the slide that has caused them to have that awful record in their past ten games. Their opponent tonight will be the up and down Chicago Blackhawks (33-24-7). Chicago enters tonight's game having lost three straight games. Before this recent slide the 'Hawks won four straight, and prior to that streak they lost nine straight. Needless to say this Chicago team has been having a Jeckyl and Hyde second half to the season.

Somebody F&*%ing Go - Panthers Defeat Leafs 5-3

When will the Leafs hit rock bottom? Three weeks ago fans thought a 5-0 loss at home at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens was it. Then it was believed to be a 6-2 thrashing a week later at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks and finally a 4-2 embarrassing loss to the tired and reeling Washington Capitals this past Saturday. Heading into last night's contest against the injury riddled and fatigued Florida Panthers (playing their third game in four nights) the Leafs were thought to be ready to break out of a slide that saw them go 1-7-1. However just 13 ...
