Russia defeats USA for U-17 Gold, Ontario takes Bronze

ONTARIO vs SWEDEN

In the early game, Max Domi scored twice in the third period, part of a four-goal explosion by Ontario in the final 20 minutes, as the two-time defending gold medalists settled for bronze at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 5-2 win over Sweden on Wednesday afternoon.

“The tide definitely turned in the third. We made that push and got the win,” said Domi, “Winning a medal means a lot.”

Sweden dominated the first twenty minutes , with Anthony Brodecki scored from Tobias Liljedahl and Robert Hagg. Fabian Gunnarsson took  a holding penalty putting Quebec in a position that they could potentially tie the game. Two giveaways on the ensuing advantage resulted in two breakaways and two goals by Leon Bristedt and Victor Ohman. Even though the shots were even at eleven for the period, Sweden was clearly the better team, using it’s size and skill to their advantage. Ohman scored his second on a one-timer to make it 4-0. USA vs Russia – 2pm

Nikita Serebryakov played incredible as he backstopped Russia to a 3-2 win over USA in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The Russian goaltender stopped 51 of 53 shots in an eventful game at the WFCU Center Friday afternoon.

Russia got off to a quick start as Sergei Tolchinski received a nice pass from Nikita Zadorov and put the puck past Hunter Miska.  Russia continued to be faster and play harder than the American squad, but in playing more physical they got caught up in it and took three straight penalties. Ontario started strong but lost Jordan Maletta of the hometown Windsor Spitfires to an apparent knee injury on a kneeing call to Czech Republic’s Jan Stencel. Canadiens Well Represented at World Juniors

With the 2012 World Junior Championships just around the corner, Canadiens fans can take great pride in knowing that three prospects of the team will suit up for Team Canada when the tournament opens on December 26th in Alberta. Forwards Brendan Gallagher and Michael Bournival will play for Canada, along with this years first round draft pick Nathan Beaulieu.
