As the Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Capitals meet on January 1st for the annual Winter Classic, tonight's game is being billed as a preview of the NHL's must-see game of the year. Capitals' captain Alex Ovechkin (6G/7A/13pts) - a powerhouse scorer in his own right - has expressed admiration for Patrick Kane's (4G/5A/9pts) stickhandling skills, and the respect is returned from the Blackhawks' talented winger. The two play very different styles, but both are among the top scorers in the league, and both are very entertaining players. They, plus their many talented teammates, should make for an interesting game not only tonight, but on New Year's Day as well.&n...
The Blackhawks came into the game with the Washington Capitals that really did not mean much too either team but for different reasons. The Capitals have been eliminated from the playoff and after the weekend will be hitting the golf courses until the fall.
The Blackhawks are on the opposite end of the spectrum. They will be going to the post season but with their position solidified at third place in the division really had nothing to play for and it showed on the ice.
The game was basically a practice session held at the Verizon Center in Washington DC. This game gave a good opportunity for the special teams to be assessed before going into the playoffs. The Hawks went up ag...
The following is a rant broken into mini bits of thoughts poorly strung together. It's going to cover a whole lot of bleepin' (this is how I'm going to curse because I'm in the mood (I'm always in the mood) for a good curse) subjects. If you come to something you don't like, skip down some. Or just bail on it. I ain't mad at ya.
(I'm a little rude to Canada later. It's nothing against you personally, Canada. All the Canadians I know are lovely people, I just got my feelings hurt.)
The Washington Capitals are going down the left coast this week and the games are late, so I'm probably not going to watch.
Being a half-decent sports fan is about moderating expectations.
You don't want to be that guy or girl who goes into every season saying "this year is ours because reasons" because if you do, you'll wind up crying in the corner clutching your jersey and listening to sad Radiohead. You don't want that.
A 4-3 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh saw the Capitals slide to third in the Metropolitan division, their third loss in a row. It was a good effort by the visiting Caps but, like always, almost every Capitals goal saw a Penguins equalizer shortly after.
And on cue with 1:54 to go, the Penguins scored a gut-punch goal from rookie defenseman Olli...
Tonight is the first preseason game in D.C. for the Capitals. Their preseason roster is playing the preseason roster of the Chicago Blackhawks, the champs themselves. If Washington Redskins fans can tell you anything about preseason results, it’s that preseason game results are beyond all of lies, damn lies and statistics. Don’t stress the score. This is still part of the buildup to a real season of hockey and the score is not important. What’s important is that there is hockey in D.C. again. This I know. (There will be an outdoors game in D.C. in 2015 too. The temperature during the week will undoubtedly hover around 45 degrees and the game will be pla...
The New York Islanders kick of their final stretch of games for the 2013 season against the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. The Isles play their last 5 games of the lockout-shortened season away from Nassau Coliseum.
The Islanders head in to Toronto 1-0-1 against the Maple Leafs this season. After a huge 7-4 win over the Leafs back in January, the Isles lost 5-4 in overtime against Toronto in February, where Nazeem Kadri tallied his first NHL hat-trick for the Leafs.
The New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals took the ice on Thursday night in Washington D.C. for their third and final meeting of the 2012 - 2013 season. With the Islanders being victorious in the first two matchups, the red-hot Caps would take this one in a 2-1 shootout.
After the Capitals scored at the end of the first period, it wouldn't be until the end of the third when Kyle Okposo tied the game 1-1. After an incredible showcase by goaltenders Evgeni Nabakov and Braden Holtby, Alexander Ovechkin would notch the lone shootout tally to send the Isles off with only a point.
