Chimera lifts Caps over Jets in OT

Jason Chimera leads the Washington Capitals with 8 goals. Not Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin or Nicklas Backstrom, the man who had just 10 goals all of last year does.

With his overtime winner over the Winnipeg Jets tonight, Jason Chimera now is two goals shy of last season's total after just 20 games. How's that for secondary scoring.

The Caps also got goals from Alex Semin and Nicklas Backstrom in addition to Chimera's two tallies. Semin scored his 6th goal of the season just one game after being benched by coach Bruce Boudreau.

Alex Ovechkin hit the scoring sheet on a beautiful pass to setup Semin's goal in the f...

Chimera leads Caps over Jets

Jason Chimera scored two goals including the overtime winner on Wednesday night as the Washington Capitals edged the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 at the Verizon Center.

Washington opened the scoring 5:23 into the 1st period as Alex Semin took a pass from a streaking Alexander Ovechkin and beat an out of position Ondrej Pavelec.

The Jets tied the game just past the 13-minute mark when Kyle Wellwood made a nifty pass in the neutral zone to Nick Antropov, who dished it to captain Andrew Ladd who put home his 7th of the season to tie the game at 1.

Twelve seconds later, Jason Chimera scored his 7th of the season on a pass from Brooks Laich at the half boards and once aga...

Jets Looking For 4th Consecutive Win

Wednesday night marks the second meeting of the season between two Southeast Division teams when the Washington Capitals (11-7-1) host the Winnipeg Jets (8-9-3).

While the Caps enjoyed their first win in five games, the surging Jets are riding their first 3-game winning streak of the season, which includes a decisive win over the Capitals in Winnipeg on November 17th.

In that game, the Jets were forced to deal with early adversity when Alex Semin scored short-handed 3:53 into the first. Just under 4 minutes later, Evander Kane put home his 1st of 2 goals of the night en route to a 4-1 win for Winnipeg.

The Jets are coming off of another offensively focused...

Game 20: Caps continue short homestand, host Jets at Verizon

November 23 vs. Winnipeg Jets at Verizon Center
Time: 7:00 pm
TV: CSN-D.C., TSN-Jets, CSN-MA

After a brutal 0-3-1 four-game stretch, the Capitals finally got back on the winning side of things with a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night in D.C.

They'll be looking for more of the same as they play the middle game of a three-game homestand against their division rival (still weird I know), the Winnipeg Jets.

The Jets have recovered from an awful start and sit just four points behind Washington in the standings. Winnipeg also manhandled the Caps in their la...

Caps offense awakens, down 'Yotes 4-3

The Washington Capitals finally showed some of the offense they've been accustomed to over the years by beating the Phoenix Coyotes 4-3 Monday night at Verizon Center.

After falling behind 2-0 on two shorthanded goals, one on a penalty shot, the Caps offense woke up thanks to a couple of hometown bounces.

John Carlson's blast from the point hit a stick and deflected past Jason Labarbera to make it 2-1. Then it was rookie Cody Eakin's turn to get a bounce. Eakin ripped a slap shot of Keith Yandle's stick and off Labarbera's and into the net to tie the game at 2-2.

The Caps then seized the momentum, getting third period goals from Nick...

Game 19: Reeling Caps host Coyotes + Kuznetsov

The Caps have lost four straight (0-3-1), six of its last seven (1-5-1) and seven of its last 11 (3-7-1) heading into tonight's matchup with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Yikes.

That 7-0 start to the season seems like ages ago for the struggling Caps, who have scored just three goals in their past three games. The once-high powered Caps haven't scored more than three goals in a game yet this month.

Yikes again.

It's been an ugly November for the boys from D.C., even including a superstar/coach spat earlier between Alex Ovechkin and Bruce Boudreau.

The Caps hit rock bottom with Saturday's 7-1 loss at Toronto, a game in whic...

Game 17: Caps pay first visit to the new 'Peg

For the first time since December 1995, the Washington Capitals will visit Winnipeg, Manitoba tonight to face the new look Jets at MTS Centre at 7:30 pm.

The Caps continue their short three-game road trip following a heartbreaking loss in Nashville to the Predators 3-1, in a game in which the Predators scored in the final minute to steal a win in regulation.

Despite the loss, the Caps peppered Pekka Rinne with 40 shots on Tuesday, and controlled much of the game before faltering just before the end of regulation. But for a team lauded for its offensive firepower, the Caps have been pedestrian in the goal scoring depa...

Caps stunned by Preds in final minute

With the Caps and Predators deadlocked in a 1-1 tie with a minute left in the third period, the last thing one would expect was a two goal explosion from the home-standing Predators.

But then it happend.

Colin Wilson scored the go-ahead goal for the Preds at 19:35 and Shea Weber followed with a blast into the empy cage to seal the deal at 3-1 just five seconds later.

In the span of about a minute, the Caps went from a hard earned point on the road to wondering what happened.

In a night that featured a battle of two goalies on top of their game all night in Tomas Vokoun and P...

Game 16: Caps pay visit to the Music City to face Predators

The Predators and their fans will get a look at a familiar face when the Capitals invade the Music City tonight.

That face will be that of Joel Ward, the Preds playoff hero of a spring ago, who signed with the Caps this offseason. Ward had 13 points (7 G, 6 A) in 12 playoff games for the Preds last spring.

While the Caps will have Ward on their side, they'll have to deal with Preds goalie Pekka Rinne, who is 8-4-3 with a 2.28 GAA and a .929 SV % this season after being a Vezina finalist last season.

The Caps are 4-2 on the road this season, but two of the losses have come on the road against Western Conference tea...

Game 14, 15: Caps set for home and home series with Devils

The Caps (9-4-0, 18 points) travel to New Jersey tonight to play the Devils in the first of a back to back. The teams play in D.C. on Saturday night.

Alex Ovechkin and Co. are coming off of a home throttling courtesy of the red-hot Dallas Stars, who handled the Caps 5-2 back on Tuesday.

The Devils will be without the services of star forward Ilya Kovalchuck this weekend as he nurses a minor leg injury. Martin Brodeur will get the call in net for the Devils on Friday, with the back-to-back on the schedule, Johan Hedberg will start Saturday.

Brodeur is 2-2 this season with a 3.00 GAA and an .885 SV % in ...
