Isles Get A Huge Shoot Out Victory In Winnipeg

The Isles took a big step towards the playoffs yesterday afternoon with another road victory in Winnipeg. Brian Strait was back in the line up, so Matt Carkner sat yesterday.

This was one of the most exciting games this season, with so much on the line for both teams. In the beginning of the first, the Isles looked a little tired. That would not last long though, as Frans Nielsen scored his 6th of the season just 4:21 into the game on a nice play from Okposo and Bailey. (Photo: MVerminski/flickr)

The bad news: The Islanders head into Thursday night’s game against the Winnipeg Jets having lost 5 straight games. The good news: The Islanders recorded a point in each of their last two games, falling in a shootout to the Penguins, and in overtime (amid a controversial call) to the Sharks on Saturday.

Head Coach Jack Capuano has had since Saturday night’s game to focus on getting his team back to playing 60 minutes of winning hockey. The Islanders controlled much of the play in their past two games, but fell to a red-hot Marc Andre Fleury and were victims of a referee’s error which resulted in the Sharks’ game-winning goal in overtime.&nbs...

Despite the period known universally as "free agent frenzy," passing weeks ago, there was still some unfinished free agent business left. As training camps approached around the league several high-profile RFA's remained unsigned and dangerously close to "holding out." No one benefits from holding out. The player can damage his reputation among his peers, clubs are usually left without one (or more) of their better players, and fans are left bewildered at all parties. In a perfect world all RFA's would be signed ahead of camp. This week several of them did reach new accords while a couple still remain unsigned. Let's take a look.

Recently, James van Riemsdyk of the Philadelphia Flyers signed a 6-year contract extension worth an average of $4.25M.The huge problem with this extension is that it completely defeats the purpose of Restricted Free Agency. In 2004 the NHL had a lockout because of skyrocketing costs of player salaries. A 24% rollback in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement seemed to remedy this issue, along with caps on individual contracts and finally, new rules for UFA and RFA status.

I read this article the other night and began thinking about the Dion Phaneuf trade. The fact that Brian Burke was able to acquire his cornerstone player and eventual Leaf captain for basically nothing still boggles my mind. Burke unloaded an underachieving pending UFA in Matt Stajan; a small, tweener defender having a career year (who was also a pending RFA looking to cash in) in Ian White; a streaky, run of the mill winger in Niklas Hagman; and a journeyman fourth line winger in Jamal Mayers. In addition to Phaneuf the Leafs also obtained well thought of at the time Flames prospect Keith Aulie and veteran winger Fredrick Sjostrom.
