Postgame 1/27/14/: Islanders vs. Bruins

The Islanders knew before the game that their heads had to be in this game even though they would be playing against the Rangers at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. The Islanders had a revitalized lineup now that Lubomir Visnovsky and Evgeni Nabokov have returned to the roster.

The Islanders came out completely flat against the Bruins in the first period as they were heavily outshot. The Bruins were beating them to the pucks and finally capitalized on a chance when Loui Ericksson put a wrist shot past Kevin Poulin. About 8 minutes later, the Islanders were able to pick up some momentum and nod the score at 1 with Frans Nielson's career high 18th goal. The goal was assisted by Kyle Okposo.

The second period was filled with plenty of scoring. Brad Marchand was able to kick off the action with a goal off a beautiful feed from Patrice Bergeron. Michael Grabner answered minutes later with a quick shot again coming off a pass from Captain America himself, Kyle Okposo. Reilly Smith gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead when there was a delayed penalty coming against the Islanders. Michael Grabner and Kyle Okposo exchanged passes on a 2-0 as soon as Kyle Okposo's penalty was expired and tied the game yet again at 3. Just before the period ended, Carl Soderberg gave the Bruins a lead as he beat Thomas Hickey and lifted the puck over Kevin Poulin.

Things completely fell apart for the Islanders in the third period as they gave up two very weak goals in the first 10 minutes. Goals by Brad Marchand and Zdeno Chara gave the Bruins a 6-3 lead and finally, Kevin Poulin was yanked and replaced by Evgeni Nabokov. A late power play failure by the and the chants of "Let's go Bruins" in the background were a slap in the face.

If the Islanders seriously want to have a chance at making the playoffs, they need to start taking away some points from these teams that they are outplaying. Hopefully, the outdoor game against the Rangers will get them on a roll.
