Do you have...game?Ok, here's a question. Why do some players have a great game and others do not? If the NHL is the high game you can play, why is it that only some players shine and other don't? Could it be that the "Scouts" out there are not doing a good job at selecting the proper players? Could it be that some players are really good at sales and other are not? Here's what I hear all of the time..."the talent is being washed out by too many teams." Yeah, right. Not!
Ok, so why do some players fall into that "wow" factor and others really kind of stink up the joint? Simple, just 5 easy words…"Six inches between their ears!" The main problem is that once players get up to that level and after a couple of years, they forget what they are there for. Well, think about it. I think every hockey player at some point in his life, dreams of being in the NHL. But there are a lot of players out there that don't get the chance of doing exactly what Patrick Kane did, scoring the winning goal in overtime, in the Stanley Cup final, let a lone making it to that level
After the winning goal, a reporter asked him what he thought about his performance and his said…"I have dreamed of this day!" Ever since when I was a little boy, I have always dreamed of scoring the winning goal in overtime during the Stanley cup game to win the cup, he says. But the whole secret in this little message was that he dreamed of it.
Now, if you are one of those budding little soon to make it to the NHL kind of kid, remember this one little thing that I am about to tell you. The reason why you are at, where you are in life is because you did things that other wouldn't do! That's the main reason why you are there and others are playing in the beer league. An NHL GM once told me…"It's not what you know, it's not who you know, it's being at the right place at the right time."
Hum, ok, if it's not what I know and it's not who I know, then how do I make the timing correct so I am in the right place at the right time? This is what I have told myself over the years and here is what I found out. But, before I spill my guts, I want to give a little disclaimer that goes something like this…" Just because I say it, doesn't mean you have to do it." However, after 30+ years of hockey coaching, I have seen a lot. Not that I know everything, it's just that I recommend when you go to the information table to eat, you take what you want, digest it, and leave the other stuff that you don't like, behind. Makes sense, right?
Ok, so here's what I found out. "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe…it can achieve!" Ok, I hear it right now from the non-believers…"oh that's a bunch horse shifting sand" Well, here's the thing. Back in the mid 60's, yes I know that was during the love child era and everyone was doing drugs, but that was also the time when Russia was kicking everyone's behind on just about everything.
One of the things the Russians were doing in the 60's was that they found out that even though the mind was the greatest computer ever, they found out that you can pre-program it, just like any other computer. Wow, do you know what this means? No! Ok, look at it this way. One of the riches men in the world is Bill Gates. What does he make? (Jeopardy music here) That's right….software. No, I'm not telling you to go out and make software. We are talking about pre-programming and controlling your computer on your shoulders, also in around about way…your destiny. So, here's what those crazy love child Russians did. They took two Basketball teams, one team they had doing the actual physical practice on the court for 4 or 5 months and then at the same time, took the other team and had them sit in a dark room on recliner chairs listening to music on head phones. Back them; they were the big bulky speakers on your head, type of head phones. You know, the ones that made you look like Princess Leia
During this dark room session, they had the team on the recliner chairs visualizing making the perfect pass, the perfect shot. You know the kind of shot that doesn't even hit the rim…just nothing but air. Well, they also told these dark room guys that when they hear the beat of the base drum within the music that they had to picture in their mind that perfect pass or the perfect shot on each beat.
Then after 4 or 5 months later, the team that was in the dark room, destroyed the other team that did the actual practice on the court. Wow, holly smokes. Again, what does this mean? Well, here's what they found out. The mind does not know the difference between the subconscious and the conscious mind. Even though one works while we are a sleep and the other while we are awake, the actual mind can not tell the difference between the two.
Now, please, don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you to go and sit in a recliner the rest of your life. I'm not sure a 5 foot, 7 inch, 300 pound Basketball player can run up and down the court for an hour. But, what they found out was that because the mind can't tell the difference, you can pre-program the mind to think like you have already performed this task and that when you did perform this task, it was perfect! So when you go out and work on this task, it will be prefect, each and every time.
So you see, you can actually control your own destiny. You have the power within you to make things work perfectly, if you choose too. It's just a matter of putting into action certain disciplines'. Ok, so let's go one step further. How can you make this work for you? Ok, here's the secret to success…so to speak. Every night (now I didn't say every once in a while) I said every night, just before you go to sleep, you lie down with a pillow under your head with your favorite music playing on head phones.
Caution: Do not listen to music on the radio. Why? Because when you fall asleep after several minutes, unbeknownst to you, every 30 minutes at the bottom of the hour, comes the news and most news is all bad. The reason why it's all bad it because that's what sells advertising and the last think you need is to learn it how to rob a bank or how to shoot someone.
You see, the Russians found out that the mind works all night long for 8 hours on the last 5 minutes before you go to bed. Have you ever watched your favorite night show and just when it ends you are about to hit that off button and that snappy little tune comes on that commercial, you head off to bed and the next morning you wake up singing that snappy little tune? Yeah, that's right; you just worked on that snappy little tune for 8 hours. Oh, and by the way, advertisers hope that you listen to that little jingle before you go to bed, then they are getting 8 hours of programming for free…get it!
Ok, so when your head hits that pillow, and that music start moving your feet, stop and concentrate on the perfect shot, the perfect pass, the perfect goal, the perfect reception and when I say perfect, I mean the pass needs to be "Tape to Tape". That one timer needs to be the perfect timing pass and it goes right off your stick like a rocket! When you do that hip check, you visualize that guy going up in the air with both arms and legs spread out in every direction like blades on a helicopter.
For you goalies, you picture in your mind the perfect save, the perfect two legged pad slide, the perfect catch the puck out of thin air save where the crowd goes…"what the….!
Yeah, you know that feeling. It's at the point where the winger has his hands up in the air and you do that little no nothing scissor split save and it goes off the tip of your skate in the corner and everyone in the stands are yelling your name….yeah that one.
Ok, so now that you have this little secret and in order for this to work, you will have to do this every night for 30 days. If you skip a night, you have to start all over in the count down process. So don't miss a night. Now keep this in mind, the Russians did this for 4 to 5 months in a row, not just 30 days. The more you do this, the more solid programming you will do. Now, for you skeptics out there, just try it for 30 days….what's it going to hurt, your time? What 5 minutes before you go to bed, that's all! Come on, it's just 5 minutes and the only thing you have to do is listen to music and think about playing the perfect game.
Ok, here's the last thing. Now don't freak out on this one. If this will work in getting you to the next level in your game, what can this do for you in other areas of your life? Say…love, money, power, health…etc? At this point in your life, what do you have to lose?
