That article is absolute crap. There's no way of knowing if there were any offer sheets for Stamkos because he would have to sign it first. Moreover, that piece of turn Simmons says he would have signed a one year deal. How would that help anyone? The Bolts would have no problem signing a one year deal at that price. There's much more that goes into offer sheets than just putting them out there. Simmons is a dinkus.
Prax - the one year deal might not sound like a big deal, but the reality of it is that as long as Stamkos would be an RFA he would have to be qualified @ that amount + the minimum increase per the CBA. The net effect would be the potential for a 4-5 year contract @$12M+ per year.
Or, alienating the people he works for and his teammates by doing something like that?
The way the one year deal works is that next season, being an RFA still, the minimum qualifying offer would have to be at the lowest the same as the previous year's contract and so Tampa would have to continue qualifying him at that amount until he becomes a UFA or they negotiate something else during the season. It's a stupid argument because if they did walk from this type of offer sheet, the team that signed him would be in the exact same situation.
As for GM's not doing there jobs, I disagree. If a GM went ahead and offer sheeted Stamkos, not only would it have been matched, but now that GM has put a target on his back. There could be retaliation on said GMs own players and even other GMs refusing to deal with them and ultimately like Prax said, alienating himself. Teams are bigger than one player, so I would say by not offer sheeting Stamkos and protecting their own teams, GMs did their jobs just fine.
