Khabibulin arrested in ArizonaAs if things couldn't get any worse for the Oilers...
EDMONTON -- Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin is facing charges of drunk driving and speeding following an incident in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Khabibulin was pulled over in a black Ferrari that was seen speeding down a street just after midnight Feb. 8, officer Dave Pubins said Wednesday.
"The officer estimated the driver's speed to be well over 60 miles an hour, and the speed limit there was 45. In fact, his radar got the vehicle travelling at 70," Pubins said.
"The driver identified himself as Nikolai Khabibulin and the officer noticed that Khabibulin had an odour of alcohol emanating from him. Khabibulin also admitted to drinking earlier in the evening."
Khabibulin said he had consumed one glass of wine, according to a report prepared by the arresting officer, but had watery, bloodshot eyes and was speaking slowly.
He was booked on charges of driving under the influence and excessive speed and then released. He is due back in court Feb. 26.
Oilers General manger Steve Tambellini issued a statement late Wednesday saying the team was "aware of the reports from Phoenix."
"Nikolai has been fully cooperative with the authorities," Tambellini said in a statement. "Until the continuing legal process is completed we will have no further comment."
Khabibulin joined the Oilers in the off-season after stints with the Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes and the Winnipeg Jets, as well as a run with the Tampa Bay Lightning that included a Stanley Cup win in 2004.
The Oilers had high hopes for the 37-year-old Russian, and signed him to a four-year, US$15-million deal. But he has missed most of the season with back problems, and had season-ending surgery for a herniated disc last month.
Swiss player accuses David Backes of threatsJust read this on Puck Daddy... it kinda pissed me off because it seems like no matter the sport, international players are accusing Canadians and Americans of these types of things. And why, because we're better than them? No offense to any of our readers from European descent or origin, but it seems like there a lot of sore losers this year...
Julien Sprunger is a 24-year old forward for Switzerland who plays for HC Fribourg-Gotteron in the Swiss League (National League A). A fourth-round pick by the Minnesota Wild in 2004, Sprunger's career almost came to an end as a result of a hit from David Backes(notes) of Team USA in last spring's World Championships. Sprunger underwent neck surgery over the summer and worked with a psychologist to be sure he wasn't hesitant on the ice going forward.
Sprunger told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun that he never heard from Backes since he hit. One thing that motivated Sprunger in his return to hockey was knowing that Switzerland's first game in the Olympics would be the United States.
Fast forward to yesterday afternoon after Team USA's 3-1 win over the Swiss and Sprunger told LeBrun that during the game Backes threatened to "do it to you again if you want", reminding him of the hit from the World Championships. Backes denied the allegation and said he told Sprunger to "keep his head up when he was running around a little bit."
"I was pretty distraught that it happened the first time. You don't ever want to hurt anybody," Backes said. "It was a hard, finished check. He's a good player, and I'm glad he's back on the ice. We had a good battle today, we had a few run-ins, but I don't think I would stoop that low to dig my fingers and pour salt in the wound."
One game into the tournament for the U.S. and Backes has scored a sweet goal, similar to one he put home back in December against the Vancouver Canucks and found himself in the middle of a small controversy with a player he has history with. At the rate (Inglourious) Backes is going, the Canadians are lucky that there's no fighting in the Olympics as Jonathan Toews(notes), Corey Perry(notes) and Rick Nash(notes), to a degree, found out.
Video of the hit in question from last year, which isn't even dirty:
Kevin Smith kicked off plane for being too fatFrom his twitter, he ranted about it in like 10 consecutive posts:
''Look folks: some people seem to think that because I work in the pictures, I should piss away money on private jets or first class flights. Rest assured: I take LOTS of first class flights. But while I've got some comfortable money, it'd disappear quick if I didn't respect a $. So for quick, 1hr flights to Vegas or SF from LA, I never minded @SouthwestAir. Never had a problem with them before, either. But contrary to their claim that I regularly purchase two seats, I wasn't a regular 2-seat buyer until just this week. They SEIZED on that. In their "apology" blog, they implied (or flat-out wrote) that I regularly purchase 2 seats. Writing that buttresses their lie: 2 Fat 2 Fly. But, by their own guidelines, I was not, in fact, 2 Fat 2 Fly: the arm rests went down & I could buckle my seat belt w/o an extender. So...? Hey @SouthwestAir: you bring that same row of seats to the DailyShow, and I'll sit in 'em for all to see on TV. If I don't fit, I'll donate $10k to charity of your choice. But when I do (& buckle the belt as well)? 1) You admit you lied. 2) Change your policy, or at least re-train your staff to be a lot more human & a lot less corporate when they pull a poor girl off the plane & shame her. ''
Then earlier today:
''Had three seats/whole row for me & Jen. She skipped SF, so I went solo checked in and was given the 2 tix there & return 2 (for that p.m.). Going out, even with 2 tix, I only sat in one seat, sleeping against window, w/empty seat between me and follow passenger. Coming back would have been the same, at 7pm. But I got to the airport early enough to try to bump-up my flight to 5:20 - a practice @SouthwestAir does often.I was told 5:20 flight was packed, but I could go Standby. They sent me to gate. Told lady whole story, and she said there wouldn't be two seats on that earlier flight. I said I only needed one seat & that I didn't buy an extra seat because I'm fat (which I am), but because I'm anti-social and didn't want to sit next to someone & possibly have to make convo (in person, I'm very shy). She said she understood. I was issued the solo ticket. I get on the plane: open seat in the front row. Put my bag away, the sit between two ladies. As I'm about to buckle my extender-less seatbelt, the woman who issued the ticket to me appeared in the doorway of the plane, came over to me and said the Captain said I wasn't going to be allowed to sit there because I was a safety risk. I asked for clarification and was given none (also asked "Please don't do this" but that, too, fell on deaf ears. Ladies on either side said I wasn't a problem. SWA-lady said arm-rests the decider. Arm-rests come down, and voila! I'm legit! I've passed the stinkin' arm-rest-test. And still, the lady asks me to get up and come with her off the plane. I get up without a fuss at all, quietly grab my bag, make eye contact with a fellow Fatty who was praying he'd pass, and leave. You think I wanna fuck around on an airplane? I was right: I fit in that seat. But I can't risk not complying: I'm more afraid of AirFeds.

Georgian Luger dies at OlympicsWHISTLER, British Columbia - A men's Olympic luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia reportedly died after crashing during a training run Firday.
The Toronto Sun reported that Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed after losing control of his sled, going over the track wall and hitting a steel pole near the finish line at the Whistler Sliding Center.
Emergency crews performed CPR on the 21-year-old athlete, a native of Borjomi, Georgia, but we unable to save his life."I've never seen anything like that," said Shiva Keshavan, a four-time Olympian from India said before knowing Kumaritashvili's fate. "I'm afraid it's bad."
Training was suspended indefinitely. Members of the International Luge Federation were called for a briefing and team captains from each nation were asked to attend a meeting.
Kumaritashvili competed in five World Cup races this season, finishing 44th in the world standings.
Earlier in the day, gold-medal favorite Armin Zoeggeler of Italy crashed, losing control of his sled also around Curve 11. Zoeggeler came off his sled, held it with his left arm to keep it from smashing atop his body, and slid on his back down several curves before coming to a stop and walking away.
Training days in Whistler have been crash-filled, with a Romanian woman briefly knocked unconscious and at least four Americans -- Chris Mazdzer on Wednesday, Megan Sweeney on Thursday and both Tony Benshoof and Bengt Walden on Friday in the same training session where Zoeggeler wrecked -- having serious trouble just getting down the track.
“I think they are pushing it a little too much,” Australia’s Hannah Campbell-Pegg said Thursday night after she nearly lost control in training. “To what extent are we just little lemmings that they just throw down a track and we’re crash-test dummies? I mean, this is our lives.”

Not a good start for the Olympics....
30 Olympic Athletes ALREADY caught for drug useWe all knew this was going to happen, but 30 athletes before the games even start? Wow...

The World Anti-Doping Agency has confirmed that more than 30 athletes have been prevented from competing at the Vancouver Olympics for breaking anti-doping rules.
Wada's president, John Fahey, has refused to give details of the athletes involved. He told a news conference yesterday that the sports or national federations were handling the cases that have emerged in recent months.
He says athletes trying to cheat in Vancouver are more likely to be caught "than in any other Games in our history".
Fahey says more than 70 athletes were prevented from competing at the Beijing Olympics for violating anti-doping rules in a similar period leading into the 2008 summer Games.

Habs can grab 6ththe habs have an opportunity tonight to grab possession of 6Th place in the eastern conference. with a win tonight the habs will have 60 points in 58 games, just over .500 on the season. but to do so the habs will have to go through the free falling Bruins. entering the game a franchise tying eight game loosing streak, the Big bad bruins will be looking to change there fortune against a habs team that just came off an inspiring win over the Canucks this past Tuesday night.
with both lineups being mostly hurt this season, the game should still be interesting to watch. Lapierre even said that it will be playoff hockey till the end of the season. the habs have a golden opportunity to continue feeding on the momentum built during there last game. they have all the cards in there favor. but with the roller coaster year like the habs have had some might still have worries about a win a tonight.
the coach of the Bruins, Claude Julien was given a vote of confidence from his GM last week, as was Hitchcock 3 weeks ago, look were he is now. often said as being the kiss of death, speculations are that it might be the last game for Julien, depending on the outcome.
will the habs win? will it be the Julien good bye party? what ever it is were in store for a war tonight!
Canadiens VS Bruins, Live at 7pm on RDS, CJAD AM and CKAC AM
Let the war begin!
